It was just a little bit absurd that people were open to the idea of paying him ~$19M to be a starter next season.

I read Davis' comment...and he didn't exactly say that the JETS TOLD HIM DARNOLD WAS GONNA BE THE GUY. It was more like..roughly paraphrasing, "I am preparing as if Darnold is the QB and he is a good QB".

The question is if there is a no trade clause in there because I dont see how that adjustment made him less likely to be moved.

He most likely gained some guaranteed money out of it, but is now on a similar level deal as Cam.

You could easily bring him in for a 4th, let Cam and him battle it out and release the loser of that competition with a similar level of dead money attached.

Both have somewhat similar profiles in terms of mobility. Cam makes his runs work through power and is more a inside the tackles threat, Mariota attacks the edges with speed when he runs.

Cam is more accomplished and a much better leader, Mariota the more accurate thrower.

It really wouldn't change your playbook too much having both of them fight it out. And it doesn't stop you at all from going after a rookie QB. For that you will need to cash in future picks anyway.

Really, how many rushing TDs did Painter have in that case?

How many drives that led points?
The colts were 28th in scoring that year, the patriots were 27th last year.
The colts were 27th in passing offense that year, the patriots were 30th last year.

But it also now helps vegas to keep him as QB2 and release peterman with this salary.

Yeah they have more leverage in terms of asking for compensation in return.

Thing is that at best they will get a 4th or so back as comp pick -- if any -- so their demands still wont be outrageous.

I see one drawback.
I think the reason, the only reason, newton is back is that he knows the offense. We are drafting a QB and if we do it right it’s his team by the time the leaves turn brown.
If you have Newton, who knows the offense and pretty much is what he is, he going to suck no matter what you do, then you can devote the coaching staff to getting the rookie ready without having to teach the offense to someone else to play a few games.
This is the value Newton holds, you can work with the rookie and just throw Newton out there until he is ready and it doesn’t really make much difference how much time you spend with newton. He’s never going to learn the right way to play an so just chuck him out there, limit his impact as much as you can and stay competitive with d until the rookie is ready.

Marcus Mariota stays with Raiders on massive pay cut.
So our options are Newton Stidham trade for Darnold, trade for Jimmy G trade for Minshew or go to the draft.
What does Everyone think Patriots will do?
I just want to make sure you're ok buddy.
