Agree. I think they like him but don't LOVE him.I can see the Patriots not being as high as us fans about JC Jackson.
If he destroyed #1WRs then the narrative is different.

It really is a win/win move in my opinion.
Either someone else negotiates the contract for you and that contract will be below market value given that they have to give away a second round pick as well. And if it ends up too rich for us we will get back better compensation than a potential third round comp pick in 2 years.
All this while saving a million.
But he is a $5M player, and IMO he should have been tendered at the $4.7M. Is Belichick really saying that he'd prefer the 2nd to having Jackson?JC is not a $13m/yr player.
We could have a starting corner for $4.7M. We're daring anyone to pay him more than we will. OK, let's say Bill is right and no one will sign him to an acceptable (to him) market contract. Then, yeah, congrats, the pats saved $1M on a starting corner, and just BTW, I suspect that jackson will understand that this is a business after the $1M haircut, and will play elsewhere in 2022.It really is a win/win move in my opinion.

Jackson will either get a market contract (big win for him since Belichick could have stopped that for another $1M). Otherwise, Jackson is a free agent after being paid 2nd round tender for a year. And Jackson will take the injury risk and lose $1M.win-win-win. Jackson probably prefers a second round tender too. Butler lost out on a big contract from the Saints because of the first round tender attached to him.
With an assist from Pellegrino.Imagine Bill getting a second round pick out of him after getting him as an UDFA 3 years ago .. chess vs. checkers
The 2022 1st is potential ammunition to move up for a QB.I want BB to trade 2022 1st rounder. That draft is gonna suck

So you think BB is being a penny-wise and pound- foolish? But he is a $5M player, and IMO he should have been tendered at the $4.7M. Is Belichick really saying that he'd prefer the 2nd to having Jackson?

Agreed. BB wants to gauge JCJ’s market, and he can’t do that with a first round tender since no team is going to want to give up a first for him. Now with a second round tender, teams may be a little more empowered to try seeing what JCJ would take but losing their second round pick will be baked in to their proposal. He will get paid top end money next year either way. The Pats paying him 4M or 3M this year is irrelevant with respect to that.
This is the best way of maybe getting something long term done. If nobody signs him to an offer sheet he will most likely be gone next year and at best we might get a third round comp pick back in two years. Maybe.
There is also no real risk involved since they have the opportunity to match. Whether JCJ plays for the Pats or not this year is entirely under BBs control.
I definitely think it's in play in this draft. If we don't move up in the draft maybe we can get Jax's pick in the second, for our 2022 1st + a swap of picks next year or this year. Jax will still have drafted 2 players by then and still have the 14th pick in the second round. Jax drafted 12 players last year. That's a lot of youth. That could make the 33rd pick available while picking up another 1st rounder in'22.The 2022 1st is potential ammunition to move up for a QB.
I think the crux of my disagreement with those who think it was smart to go with the 2nd round tender over the 1st is that others seem to believe letting Jackson gauge the market would somehow decrease his asking price. Why would that be the case?
For the sake of argument, let's assume that it is the case. How much money are we talking about having saved by letting other teams set the market? A couple million per year? Does that really justify the risk of someone throwing much more money at Jackson than we would consider it rational to pay him? In that scenario, I want the 1st, not the 2nd. He's worth much more than a 2nd, even if his ceiling is #2 corner.

yes.So you think BB is being a penny-wise and pound- foolish?
More times than not he is going to be right, especially about his own players...he's a man playing against boys!! lolImagine Bill getting a second round pick out of him after getting him as an UDFA 3 years ago .. chess vs. checkers
Do we really think a team out there will give JC $16m and $13.5m in 2021 money?yes.
At best, he is allowing another team to determine the structure of the long-term contract with Jackson.
At worst, he is being hardnosed and saving a million, because he can. In that case, I really can't see jackson giving us preference in free agency next year.
