Not just a modest price, but also no long term commitment. I'm sure Mariota et al will want and will get more then one year elsewhere. Cam is in that "year to year backup or spot starter" phase of his career.

Why would a guy who publicly proclaimed he wants a starting job accept a backup job at not even good backup pay before even speaking to other teams?

Firstly statistically he struggled immediately after covid. Just having to stop training when he had had no preseason and had a new scheme to learn will obviously hinder him. Cam may have said he was asymptomatic but it's possible he was either downplaying the symptoms or they may have been very mild. it is common to just experience minor fatigue that you might not even recognise a s symptom and this can take weeks to improve. I have seen this many times, people say they are asymptomatic if they aren't in bed coughing and spluttering for a week but they may still be experiencing effects from the virus. I don't think anyone is saying he didn't have other dips in form but to say that dip absolutely wasn't due to covid isn't possible even if it was just the fact that he wasn't able to practice after only being with the team a short time that would have had an impact, What is clear is that his form took an immediate dip after the covid break after a promising start.

In his first game back, he ran for 76 yards on 10 carries, far and away his best yards per run of the season, and his second highest rushing yardage total. He also completed 17 of 25 pass attempts (68%). And, while he did throw 2 INTs, he'd thrown one in each of the two games prior, as well. And, again, he went 2-3 during the 5 game stretch following his illness, not 0-5.

Pretty much the only games where he really looked like a competent 2020 sort of NFL passer were against Seattle (Godawful pass defense at the start of the season), The Jets (Godawful everything), and the Texans (Godawful defense). And that's not because he got sick, as it was 4 games spread out over the entire season. There were a couple of low yardage, game manager sort of games as well, but those 4 were his resume games.

Clearly this means our last five years weren't as good as the previous five, but they also were above average.

It’s probably because he’s terrible. Maybe that’s just because of the team around him. But I think if you throw any 6’5 250lb guy back there not much changes.

Uh, well. That’s what people SHOULD think. He should be evaluated purely on his play and his leadership (and his play wasn’t good enough). I’ve seen countless examples over the last year on this board of people complaining about his dressing, saying “maybe he should stop dressing like x and worry about playing football” (like he isn’t already trying), saying that isn’t a franchise qb. Tons of these posts. I’d imagine you’ve seen it too. People will say “I don’t care how he dresses” and then do that.
It’s so pathetic that people here care.
Cam still has a reputation among fellow players by being a former mvp and a black qb that a lot of players root for and look up to, to be honest.
If you look at his film from the last year, I don’t think there’s any reason that guys should want to come play with him... but he still has the reputation, regardless of what the old-school fans here that get bothered by his outfits think.

Yes, for this year only, no doubt. I just believe Bill will focus on filling in the holes at all the other positions, especially on the defensive side, and he doesn't gaf what others think.

He probably believes he can win 3 to 4 more games but he knows he's not ready to compete for another SB run this season. He has to have a long outlook or he'll screw it up for the immediate future. Set things up nicely so that when that one player shows up, he can pounce. This isn't the year.

Imagine if he over reaches for a 1st round QB and the guy ends up being a flop, it'll set the team back another 3 years.

thats the million dollar question. If Cams arm is shot, then even if we upgrade the receivers/tight ends etc. its not going to matter. he wont be able to get them the ball.

I think the article was focused on the QB position and his moves since 2017 that basically ignored (aside from picking Stidham) the "so called planned" departure of the Goat. That's only reason to mention Hurst.

Am I reading your stat compilation correctly because I'm looking at 2017-19 draft data that places NE at the very bottom of the suck pile for this 3 year period?
The term "abysmal" is not a powerful enough description of NE's recent draft efforts.

I think we can do the same with Cam. Make him a Taysom Hill/Slash type of player....and even play Edelman at QB a bit too...mixed in with a rookie...

Maybe I am over thinking it on a football-less Sunday.... but Cam did show good hands in the season finale...and he is capable of blowing by slow footed linebackers if we split him outside wide in an one on one situation and bring Edelman around on an end around handed off by Harris to a play action bootleg deep pass....
