Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

I just want someone who can throw a football. I don't care if they will cost $10 instead of whatever the hell they are paying Cam. Bring in Tyrod Taylor, Fitz, Jameis, Jacoby. Any of those guys aren't going to cost a fortune and would be a perfect bridge/backup to a younger guy. Those guys aren't superstars but they can at least throw a football.
Have you heard that Cam won MVP now six years ago?

Some of Mike Reiss's takes:
Bringing back Newton, who they know well, has become a champion of their program and wanted to return, was one of the few appealing options to the team while still retaining flexibility at the position.
And:
Newton's return doesn't mean the Patriots are done at quarterback. They still have plenty of salary-cap space (they entered Friday with $56,316,719 according to Roster Management System) should an unexpected opportunity present itself in the future (e.g. Garoppolo), or in the 2021 NFL draft.
Ref: Cam Newton's return gives Patriots options, could help lure free agents

Everyone now wants to give cam the benefit of the doubt cause Bill resigned him. Nobody here really wanted him back lol, one of the worst starting qbs I’ve seen in a long time.

if he comes back and shines or even improves a bit I’ll eat my words and admit I was wrong.

Your first point is objectively not true. Go through the last 10 pages or so of the big Cam thread and you will see plenty of people who are fine with him being a bridge QB.

The weird thing about this Cam conversation for some time now is how asymmetric it is. You have the one bunch of people who just call him done and toast and then on the other side another group of people who say he should get another shot at camp with a full offseason under his belt. There is practically nobody on the board who thinks he is the solution or will be a long time answer and yet that very first group of people that dismiss him acts like everyone that thinks he might still have some gas left is crazy.

Some humility and taking a step down from absolute views would really benefit some people.

Pats could have had Mahomes last season and the offense would have look putrid

Mahomes is always throwing to wide open All-Pro TE's and WR's

Cam had no TE's and UDFA WR's .. if Mahomes had to work with that he'd do nothing passing + wouldn't have Cam's rushing to rely on

Please for the love of god or whoever you believe in, don’t ever compare Newton to Mahomes

We'll definitely be eating crow when your personal jesus spits out a 10 touchdown/15 interception season and we win 8 games.
What QB currently available to be signed will provide the Patriots with more than 8 wins?

He absolutely sucks.

If Cam is our starting QB next year I plan on doing a shot every bounce pass he does. Will make watching our O more bearable. The downside is I will likely be a raging alcoholic by the end of the year.

Mahomes throws to wide open All-Pro WR's and TE's .. wow, Mahomes is so great for being able to hit wide open All-Pro's

And Cam could have had all of Mahomes' weapons and that wouldnt have stopped him from skipping the ball in there or getting it tipped at the line.

Seems like this is a good value signing. Cam Newton isn't as good as an older Brady but few quarterbacks in the NFL are. Newton is underrated on this forum and elsewhere. For sure, he missed more throws in bad fashion than the typical starting qb. Many more for the amount of throws he made but at the same time, those relatively open passing lanes were only open as much as they were because of Newton's ability to run. The Patriots last year had an upgraded line but they still had bottom 5 skill position players overall and that made Newton's job tougher.

The matter is Patriots with Newton having to deal with covid and with several good FA's gone and other good players missing because of covid opt outs, went 7-8. There were more close losses than close wins.

Newton is a below average NFL starting QB right now but he is far from awful and it may be better to have a below average starter at a fair salary than overpaying an average starter.

I'd rather have the Patriots do this than trade away a few firsts for Matt Stafford and have to pay Stafford more money. I'd rather have the Patriots do this then overpay for DeShaun Watson in a Hershel Walker type deal.

Bill Bellichick has a chance to make an updated version of the 2001 Patriots... Cam won't be as good as Brady was that year. Brady was underrated that year and fairly close to the real regular season MVP of the league but the Patriots were still paying Bledsoe a much higher percentage of the cap than Cam Newton. If I am reading the report right, Bledsoe got 11 million of a cap less than 70 million at the time. It was a high-water mark for him.

And the team surrounding Brady in 2001 wasn't that good overall. The team surrounding Cam this year could be better and it wouldn't surprise me at all.

It would take a semi miracle but Bill Belichick/Cam Newton and the Patriots vs Brady and the Bucs in next years Super Bowl could happen.

Available in free agency? None. I'm just disappointed the current situation, at the most important position on offense, is exactly the same as last year. The ceiling is low. I dont buy into the "full offseason, etc" turning him into a solid starter. At this point we're relying on Harris/Michel/OL and hoping the D balls out.

On the same day that Tom Brady, the G.O.A.T., gave his new team, the Super Bowl champions, an extra $19m dollars to use in order to keep that title winning team together, the Patriots insult their fans by bringing back Cam Newton.
