Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

"Cannon, a 6'5" 358 pound mauler, played left tackle throughout his career with the Horned Frogs, but projects as a guard with the New England Patriots."

They had Light and a young Solder at the time. Maybe they hoped he could become the tackle in time, but many of his projections were at Guard.

You can post all the BS from Pats Pulpit you want, it doesn't change that the Patriots drafted Cannon to be the RT.

Solder and Cannon were drafted in the same draft. Solder was drafted as a replacement for Light. Cannon was drafted to take over at RT.

The projections come from people who aren't in the Patriots organization.

You think players are going to come here to be part of the absolute worst passing offense in the nfl because cams a nice guy? Do you think everyone on teams with a chance to win are azzholes?
Question 1 - maybe; question 2 - of course not

So that is NLTBE and leaves us with $8m, some of which is probably performance incentive-based. I am guessing it is more like a $5m cap hit.
That is 5 mill too much.

They wouldn't have to give up that much to move to 7 to get Lance..

I am not tuned in, was only going by what the Bills gave up twice to get Sammy Watkins and Josh Allen. Both those moves cost an extra #1. But whatever it takes at this point because Belichick is clearly disinterested in reclamation projects like Marcus Mariota.

This deal is not as bad as I thought. It's up to $14m with lots of incentives.

Also, a friend just clued me in that Taysom Hill is getting paid $16m so, a 1 year for Cam incentive-laden $14m isn't horribly bad.
Yes, it is. Any deal for Cam is a negative. How can anyone want to see the worst QB in the league be the Patriots starter?

In a normal year, $14m is not overpaying for a QB of Cam's caliber. Backup QBs make a little less than that.

BUT, this isn't a normal year.

Who was going to pay Cam more than $12m?

Washington is perhaps the only team that would even consider it.

We were negotiating against ourselves.
I totally agree. I would like to know who the Patriots were negotiating against?

what a waste of money and cap space, looking forward for the missed reads, hope the pats resign White too, so somebody can tell Cam who is the Mike....ffs

You mean the same player who gave up multiple sacks last year because he screwed up his pass protection assignments ?

Maybe White should work on his own presnap reads first.

Question 1 - maybe; question 2 - of course not
Wait. So you think that a player will prioritize liking newton more than he likes the guy who is actually a good qb and choose to sacrifice his career to chill
With cammy?
ludicrous.
But perhaps you can give me a list of all these guys who broke down the door robber Carolina to sign them.

Who do you trust more, Schefter or Pelissero? There is some divergence on the Newton contract. Personally I trust Schefter more BUT the Pelissero logic makes a lot more sense. So many teams are up against the cap. There is not much of a market for Cam Newton.

Unless Schefter said the $14 million was mostly guaranteed, they both may be right. When deals get announced they include all the fake money and incentives. When the details come out later, the deal is almost always far less than what is announced when you look at the real money.

I don’t think I said that but I did say if Newton is brought back them belichick needs to be checked for dimensia.
You did. But the search function doesn’t go back that far anymore for some reason. Either way you were right then and you’re probably right now.

So that is NLTBE and leaves us with $8m, some of which is probably performance incentive-based. I am guessing it is more like a $5m cap hit.
Ross, There is definitely going to be some performance related bonus pay in there, I would expect we get the cap number soon.

I can't subscribe to this. WEEI is saying 8m, which is back up money. I am good with that, IF they get a top level QB in the draft.
I think this means they’re going to target Trey Lance since they both have very similar playing styles. Might mean Newton starts again next year and mentors Lance. FWIW, Lance is also supposed to be a film junkie.

Keep in mind, the current SB MVP did not look good with these weapons lol.

Palmer and Warner are two semi recent examples of QBs who looked totally finished and rebounded. It’s not that crazy to think he could pull it off. We definitely need to draft a QB.

Hopefully Cam hits up Curtis Samuel. Cam is very popular around the league regardless of what this forum thinks of him.

Brady didn't have "these weapons". He had a rookie Meyers, a Rookie Olszewski, and half and Edelman. Not to mention holes on the O-line with no Andrews and no Wynn (for half the season). Mason and Cannon were playing injured.

Give Brady the O-Line of Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Eleumenor/Onwenu/Herron and the team is better. Look at how much Meyers improved after he came back..

I misread Rob's post.. Sorry.. That being said.. if it's 3-5M guaranteed, we're stuck with Cam for the year and he won't be on the bench.

How many starting QBs are making $3-5 million plus incentives? That still looks to be more like a high end back up contract or a guy being brought in to compete for the starting job. I could be wrong, but I don't think Cam is guaranteed anything if his base and guarantees are that small.

Why would you take a QB who is projected as a 6th rounder in the 2nd?
He would have been a 1st rounder had he not sat out...MIGHT be able to get him later but we all know BB isn’t one to pass up a head scratching reach in rd 2. I could see that being at QB this year.

So it’s basically an 8 million deal

Reiss said honors and playoff advancement.

There will be more incentives based on making the roster, game roster bonuses, yardage, TDs and whatever else.
