Gunner

Obviously he hasn’t done much yet but he’s a CB conversion from a lower level of play. The coaches see him a lot more than we do and seem to think he’s worth carrying. I’ll give him another year before I write him off entirely, though if better players are added to the roster ahead of him I won’t be too devastated if he’s gone.

Honestly he is a waste of a roster spot right now. Showed some flashes of brilliance in TC, but since then has hardly had any receptions in games this year.....combine that with (as you say) poor ability with KR/PR and frequently making absolutely boneheaded decisions....makes me really wonder how/why he is here!

Remember when Hunter Renfro (taken at 149 in the 5th round) was practically begging to be a Patriot (31 catches, almost 450 yards, returns kicks and punts)?

I do.

We even took Berrios who has been better at both receiver and returner and kept Gunner over him. Sometimes it seems like Bill likes to get cute and have another converted position college player turn into a star than get the guy who can do the job right off the bat.

The king of taking every single kickoff out of the endzone and absolutely never making it past the 25.

Gunner looked way better than Berrios that preseason. There's a reason we chose him over Berrios. That said, it has turned out that neither of them are NFL caliber players.

Coach Bill loves him some gunner bc he plays special teams and probably bc he played db in college. Don't underestimate that - I bet Bill gets his rocks off on the potential of playing Gunner at corner in a pinch...

Is he any worse than many of the other JAGtriots?

(asking for a friend)

Neither one has been great but at least Berrios has found a role as the third/fourth receiver and been a better punt returner. I just wish Bill wasn't so in love with these project type players so often.

True...however Berrios does have more reception yards then Harry at this point in their careers (though not by much).

In Gunner's defense, has he had a chance yet? Maybe that's why he's pushing too hard on every return chance.

I mean, Meyers was a BUST until...omfg!...they started throwing the ball to him! I kept hearing that Gunner was breaking ankles in the short camp, looking very Edelman like...so let's never give him a chance, okay?

I don’t think you can call any UDFA a bust but I don’t think Gunner is an NFL caliber player at the moment.

I don’t think he’s been given the opportunity to show whether not not he is, except as a returner. I’d love to see him get a chance to catch some passes.

Gunner is not any kind of threat and is really not a NFL caliber player. The fact that he is on this team and returning kicks is a joke! he is taking up a roster spot.
He Was a good story last year but we had to cut Demaryius Thomas (who was playing really well in pre season) to make room for him.

We traded Thomas to make room for Antonio Brown. Thomas was a bum anyways.

I really dont think Gunner has that much upside. Maybe I am wrong...but he doesn't have any moves returning kicks just runs as fast as he can into the first defender. Not sure I've ever seen him make someone "miss"

The Gunnah does not "look" like an NFL player on the field. However, I'm giving him this season and likely next summer camp to prove us wrong.
I remember shorter Keven "What The" Faulk fumbling a lot and failing to jump on the ball on the ground vs GB. He turned out pretty well.

If he seemed to be showing any promise in the passing game that would be one thing but guys like Donte Moncrief are getting signed off the street then within a week getting snaps ahead of him on offense. If he was ever going to contribute as receiver it would have happened as far as I am concerned. This receiving core has been running on fumes and he cant see the field and add that to the fact that he is a terrible returner I don't know why he is taking up a roster spot. Let Duggar return kicks and Byrd field punts.

8th most kick return yards in the league, 9th best in yards per return. Not amazing but better than average, top ten in a league with 32 teams.

BB spoke specifically about his unhappiness with the return game about a week and a half ago, he said they missed many opportunities to make plays there. That it had to be blocked and executed better. New special teams coach and young players... it doesn't always fall on the returner.

That said if Gunner starts running without catching the ball first, like he did against the Texans, he'll be gone fast.

The guy just isn't good. He's (at this point) just a slightly better (maybe) Braxton Berrios. Whatever flashes he showed two preseasons ago was clearly against inferior competition.

Yep, this futile, Gee-golly-look-who-Bill-found-this-time-He's-a-Genius experiment with Gunner needs to continue on the Practice Squad,
Not on the 53...and absolutely NOT on the Game Day roster.

Bill needs to replace Gunner with Isaiah Ford...as in, like, yesterday...He did trade for the man, after all...
You want Ford to return kicks and punts because of his one TOTAL return in his career for 6 yards?

As, yes, Belichick should have signed a better returner, not a high bar at all.
