Change draft strategy?

what do you think coaches and staff are doing from January til late April?

bb has video guys working on player profiles from week one of the college season until the last game is played!

he then has four months to watch tape. This has been bb’s routine for decades!

Yes. His national scouts spend all year. Then BB decides to override his staff's work just because McDaniels says his kid brother coaches Laurence Maroney in Minnesota and likes him. Highly scientific.... Not.

.

Everyone nationally trashed the Duggar pick and they were right, he is barely a NFL player and the Pats basically moved down from 23 to draft Duggar and Uche. Both were MIA last night. Now consider who they passed up, Patrick Quuen, (who we will see Sunday night). Tee Higgins, hey a WR who can actually get seperation, who needs one of them. As for the Duggar pick, could have had any number of actual NFL players, Claypool, Kmet, Delpit, WInfield Jr, Van Jefferson, basically anyone drafted from 37-150 would be better than Duggar. Plus Duggar is already 24 years old, he won't be in the league in a year or so.

Instead of taking Bass or Blankenship, he takes that kid from Marshall who apparently can't kick.
This draft was a travesty and only the sheer luck of finding Onwenu in the sixth round keeps it from an F grade!

Make no mistake, awful drafts and why the Pats have to struggle to beat the Jets. This team is seriously devoid of talent, and the HC/GM is to blame.

Yeah, whatever happened to that kid. There was a kerfuffle over his tattoos and then he disappeared...what a great use of a fourth rounder....

Uche had no position and part time playing status at Michigan. To expect him to be a contributor in our defense is a bit of a pipe dream.

Duggar was an athletic freak against d2 players. In the nfl , he is barely average athletically and can not over come inferior coaching and am inferior strength and conditioning program.

Jennings is a shock in that he knows our defense and came from a strong college program, not sure why he is under performing on the field.

both tight ends come from soft programs, hence their inability to stay out of the trainers room!

I am thinking being to the Superbowl for 4 times out of 6 has left them with no time to really focus on drafts and probably explains the lower count of players in draft board. They looked at culture fit more than tangibles. It worked as long as we had the GOAT , gronk and edelman. Let's see how next year's draft goes by...

We need to rebuild through draft next couple years as we lack talent almost everywhere with a lot of aging vets. We will also have much better draft capital than previous years if we keep losing at this rate.

Howver, given our draft record over the last few years, I have zero confidence in this team hitting on any skill positions which are clearly the greatest need.

So why not change approach? We are clearly very good at drafting OL and D, esprcially DL, LB and CB. So why not just draft those and focus free agency mostly on skill positions?

We are also good at catching/3rd down RBs but not a need.
The light dawns.

Is this a new idea: to look to free agency to find QB's, WR's, and TE's )and an occasional safety and STer)? The issue is that we have not been successful at filling these positions recently.

This 2020 draft class looks putrid. belichick has SUCKED at drafting the past 5 years

Yes. Draft based on staff who know DLine, OLine, linebackers. Totally ignore McDaniels in fact banish him from the entire draft process. WRs TEs even QBs go via nfl trades.

I would probably prefer to draft a qb and sign vet WR/TE, bc it's cheaper than signing a vet QB.

We’d probably have to settle for a guy like Lance or Trask. We’ve played ourselves out of the Lawrence sweepstakes.

Unless the Cowboys go winless the rest of the way. The Jones' have already said that they are not going to draft a QB and that they are sticking with Dax. So if the Cowboys do end up with the #1 pick, it can be had via trade. Send Jerrah whatever he wants, BB sucks at drafting anyways, so might as well trade them off for a franchise QB.

Forgetaboutit, I just checked the schedules, the Jets have zero winable games and the Cowboys have a few. The Cowboys have 2 wins, but by playing in the NFC Least, they would easily win the strentgh of schedue tiebreaker, so if both they and the Jetes finsihed 2-14, the Cowboys would have the #1 pick.

It would be funny if the Jetes picked up one win going into the final game versus the Pats and BB already had a wink and nod trade agreement in place with Jerrah for the #1 pick and the Pats tanked that game!

Yeah i agree..but i wouldn't hate it. Lance Trask or Wilson are looking good. For the passing offense Trask is used to, we would have to get some weapons, so i would prefer a qb who can run good as well cause i don't know if we can fix our WR/TE problem in one FA. I like all of them. We probably have to trade up a little cause Jets, Jags, Washington could be in the qb market as well as other teams for a trade up..

A guy is driving home from work late one week night; he's overworked, frustrated, but incredibly hungry and he decides to treat himself to a very special meal. He pulls into the parking lot of the best restaurant in town, looks at his watch, and realizes he only has a few minutes before the kitchen closes. He hurries in, gets seated, but has no menu to look at. The waitress eventually comes to the table and informs the patron that many of the signature entrees on the menu are no longer available.
She says:
"We're out of our Lobster Lawrence, a dish said to satisfy for decades.
We are also out of our Fields Filet, called the perfect cut of meat by Zagat's.
Our Lance Lamb went fast tonight.
We had a daily special of Trask Truffles, but they sold out in the first hour.
We are also out of Mond Cakes, Newman Bulldog Nachos, Ehlinger Escargot, Pork Purdy, Chicken & Wilson Waffles, Costello Carbonara, and our Mac Jones & Cheese.
In fact there's nothing available from our menu. Why didn't you come in earlier, Mr. Belichick? "

"Oh you know me, I refuse to dine early, it's a matter of principle. Anyway, there has to be something in the kitchen I can eat?"

"We can offer you our chef's special Mystery Meat Sausage, a blend of unknown table scraps sitting next to the garbage bin; blandly seasoned mystery chunks stuffed into generic sausage casings."

"Sweety, now you see why I dine here late night. I live for your late night mystery specials. Bring me two plates, a glass of water no ice, some Hunts Catsup, and some saltines if it's not too much trouble. Thanks, hun. Oh......and I want a deal on those sausage"

As the waitress left the table, Mr. Belichick noticed nearby a familiar mustached face at a table stacked with amazing food dishes.

"Hey Andy, looks like you cleaned out the kitchen with all those dishes in front of you. This meal is gonna cost you a fortune!"

"Oh Bill, the food's the best here, why not splurge. The Clams Kelci are to die for. The Tyreek Tips are a bite-sized delicacy found no where else. These stuffed Le'veon Bell Peppers are a luxury I had to experience. And you know Bill, I always compliment a fine meal with a 2017 Mahomes Merlot, rated a 100 out of 100 by Wine Spectator. Did you know Bill, Wine Connoiseur calls the Mahomes Merlot the Greatest Of All Time. I'd pay a half billion dollars to drink this wine every day. Can I get you a glass?"

"No thanks Andy, way too rich for my blood. I have my water. Truthfully, I couldn't bare paying the prices for anything on your table. Hell, I could get 50 plates of mystery sausage and have money left over for a Bentley Burger, Harry Hard Rolls, and some Cam Clams for the price you are paying for your entrees and vino. I'll stick with my sausage."

Wilson or Jones for me.

We were never in the Lawrence or Fields sweepstakes.

I have Lawrence as the best qb I have scouted since Peyton. First overall in this draft class.

I have a first round grade on fields.

I do not see a qb with a second round grade.

I have third round grades on Jones, and trask.

I have day three grades on lance, Wilson, and Purdy as well as any other qb in this draft.

ps: Howell from unc has a first overall grade for the 2022 draft from me.

i don’t believe for one minute bb does not have his fingers all in the scouting and drafting pie. I think he reviews film on every single guy in the draft and makes every single decision.

I only saw two practices this year and looking at the coach working with Duggar and the safeties, I saw him several times look nauseated when watching Duggar go through reps. And once I saw Caserio shrug his shoulders when the coach looked over at him.

I could be way off base, and
1.) I think bb only works on the draft after the regular season.

2.) I do not know who “he” is, but I saw a position coach look over at caserio and caserio shrug! Bb was at the other end of the field when this happened.

3.) in all the years I have been going to patriot practices, bb is very much a teacher and punisher. I only see him step in to give teaching/instructional moments or if someone screws up to tell them or the entire unit to run a lap. The position coaches are doing everything else until scrimmage starts and then bb also calls out down and distance and sometimes time on the clock.

only time will tell, but at the end of the day, bb is the man. And right now, we have doubts.

OJ, I love odd ducks but sometimes you're so outside you're in ;)

We need to trade down more.

Yeah I think we should trade out of 1st and 2nd round and have like 8 -10 picks in round 3 . Try all 8 out of them and hope we strike gold with 3 or 4 of those. It sure looks like we miss 1st and 2nd rounders with increasing frequency. Who was the last first rounder or second rounder we struck gold with?
