Extend Newton

I agree he still has flaws but I thought he made a big jump last year. There was a stat at the beginning of the season like he had 33 TD for only 3 INT in his last 13 games

My point was it's kinda over the top to say Cam was very bad against the Raiders. He does need to get better in the passing game though, I'll agree with that.

really bad was maybe a bit harsh but he still only had a 73.8 rtg and only a 21.7 Qbr which is not very good.

the last few games, I thought that he was slow to process the defense and identifying match up. The WR were open Sunday but he was kind stuck on his first read and was not scanning the field very well. His throwing mechanics are bad.

I would still extend him two years but I would find a way to get a guy for the future this offseason. Whether it is trading Gilmore for a first round pick or us ending up with a high pick this year find a guy who can sit and learn for a year or so. We have a whole bunch of important guys who will be free agents next year so they may end up in a full rebuild.
  • Joe Thuney, G
  • Jason McCourty, CB
  • James White, RB
  • Lawrence Guy, DT
  • Adam Butler, DT
  • David Andrews, C
  • Rex Burkhead, RB
  • John Simon, EDGE
  • Cam Newton, QB
  • Deatrich Wise, DL
  • J.C. Jackson, CB
Between them and the opt out guys who may have played their last downs as Patriots there may be a major roster overhaul and at least having Cam would be a stop gap.

last week I think(hope) was more of a product of his offensive line being out and no practice. If he struggles as much this week I will start to get worried.

hopefully andrews and most of our offense are back.

I think Cam has a great work ethic and is saying all the right things and seems to have a good attitude. I think the problem right now is the Broncos might have shown the league the blueprint against us - stacking the box and blitzing and attacking Cam will shut down this run first offense.

The SF defense isn't what it was last year but they're still good and I'm sure they'll try the same approach. If Cam can get the ball out quickly and accurately that will be helpful.

I still feel like our OL was a dumpsterfire in that game with all the injuries and lack of practice. it was a strength earlier in the season imposing their will on teams. I think with guys getting healthier our OL can get back there.

That being said Cam newton needs to be better. He held onto the ball for too long and seemed to forget his "new mechanics" that the team was working with him on. Maybe no practice was the culprit.

Yeah. And he knows he needs to get better and has said it. Gotta say I really like his attitude so far. None of the pouting that his reputation said he had at least not so far.

The Ravens running offense last year was lethal because Lamar could also throw to his TE’s. The OL was a strength of that offense and it should be for ours. I think we’re trying to be just like that. But we won’t go far with all run and no pass.

He looked like the old Cam last game, seems lack of practice made him go to his old bad habits. I expect the new Cam this week against San Fran.

Cam Newton career passing stats: 59.1% percentage completion, average 7.2 yards 184 TDs 112 Int QBR 84

Tom Brady 64% completion, 555 TDs 183 Interceptions QBR 94

Drew Bledsoe 57.5% percentage completetio average 6.6 yards 251 TDs 206 Ints QBR 76.5

Steve Grogan 52.3% % completion average 7.5 yards 182 TDs 208 Interceptions QBR 70.4

This would suggest Newton is the 2nd best Patriots QB in the modern era, so obviously not in the stratosphere of great QB's with Brady but still pretty pretty pretty good.

I think the Patriots would be smart if they can to extend him for 2-3 years and work on developing or acquiring a future starter

I agree. Great radio interviews. Smart guy, honest, team player and team attitude, speaks well. I enjoy listening to him. Great guy.

Yes agree. Holding the ball and looking deep. I saw him look around but guys were open, so I assume he did not know where to look. Oline was bad which does not help and he tried to "hang in" when possibly the better response was to release it quickly. A couple of passes by other guys tell us McDaniels was getting the ball out of his hands. A couple of his passes were "Tebow awful". Not a good look.

No preseason, short training camp and 2+ weeks of non-practice were bad for Cam. Not the same as the Titans who have the same QB as last year - Cam is new and needs reps. I think he will get better every game all season long.

Cam won't ever be Brady. Nobody we ever watch for this team ever will again. However, we can't forget Cam didn't look bad before this game. He had one day of practice and recently had covid. Let's hope he plays better next week.

That's correct as Cam is the greatest running QB in NFL history by yards and TDs. And recently came back from covid and no practice for 2 weeks straight into a game that only had 3 starting OLinemen

.

Yeah I think the “but the Titans!” argument doesn’t really apply to us. We have a brand new QB and a new offense and system. If the Titans got by without much practice that doesn’t mean we don’t need it.

I just don’t see it with Cam. I love the intangibles but he holds the ball too long and doesn’t throw with accuracy. Too many balls are overthrown. Unless there is a mechanical fix that can help his accuracy, we need to find a better alternative because his current skill set doesn’t fit this offense.

Ha! I am switching to the Tampa Bay game at halftime. Just terrible.
