Titans Covid positives, first outbreak

I see the NFL chose the full ****** route again.
Yep. The bubble was the only way to make this work. And they had the benefit of watching the MLB fail and still went with their plan.

I don't get how moving the game to Monday night really helps. Aren't those exposed to someone with COVID supposed to isolate for 14 days, regardless of whether they have a negative test or not (because of the asymptomatic incubation period)? If you are the Steelers, do you really want to take the field against these guys on Monday?
Yahoo's piece gets into it:

Much like the last few days, when the league’s most serious COVID-19 testing flaw was exposed by the Tennessee Titans in one word.
Incubation.
More specifically, the 3-7 day period when a person can become infected with COVID-19 and still pass point-of-care testing. It’s a reality that creates the problem the NFL faces now, where a person can test positive for the virus on a Saturday and create a late-week hole where the newly infected (to whom they may have spread the virus) unknowingly slip through testing barriers by virtue of an undetectable incubation period.
This has always been a creeping flaw in the league’s testing system. If someone tests positive for COVID on Saturday, how can a team determine if others are in an incubation period before a Sunday kickoff?
The simple answer? The NFL can’t. Not with the type of point-of-care testing that exists now, which failed to show any positives inside the Titans franchise beyond the assistant coach whose infection was flagged Saturday morning. At that point, it’s a fair assumption that the Titans had incubating infections heading into Sunday’s game with the Minnesota Vikings, particularly given that five employees from the football staff and four players have tested positive for COVID-19 since Monday’s testing.
It’s a scenario that lays bare what the NFL has known all along: It can put up a litany of COVID barriers in every possible inch of the league, but if COVID gets inside with even one person, testing alone doesn’t guarantee a stoppage in the spread of the virus.

So it's not about the 14 day isolation period for those who may have been exposed to the virus, it's about the 3-7 day incubation period where the current test can't detect the presence of the virus.

Note the Titans shut everything down for 7 days, hoping that there would be no more cases found in the 3-7 day window starting last Saturday where the first positive was detected.

Once new testing showed one more player and one more coach became positive on Monday, it was no longer viable to say that the Titans were free of the virus on this upcoming Saturday.

Ref: The NFL’s major COVID testing flaw has been exposed. But is the league willing to eliminate it?

I more or less agree, but would state it a bit differently: The major hole in NFL's plan is they allow players and staff to be exposed to friends and family. I get it, a team has 53 players and a dozen or so coaches plus equipment people, trainers, etc so that's a huge circle to try to put into a bubble, but I think "failure is not an option" and they needed to go the extra step of providing something like a bubble for each team to stay inside.

Obviously not wearing their masks as required is stupid, but I question why they are at a "gala" type event at all. Seems like poor choices in priorities here.
Yeah, the masks are not my point. That does nothing to protect them. They should not be at that event.

I have seen a lot of people say the NFL should have a bubble. What I have not yet seen is anyone explain to me how such a thing is even remotely possible given the needs of 32 NFL clubs.

I don't think it was that hard. Have 3-4 places for the teams to play like MLB had proposed and keep everyone in that location for the season and isolated from friends/family. I know it is a big ask but the NBA did it. Not sure how else you avoid this exact situation which the NFL saw happen with MLB.

I neither know nor care what MLB proposed so I cannot speak to that. As for your above suggestion, there is a very key fact that countless people are missing. The whole point of a bubble is no one leaves. If you have 3-4 bubbles spread out across the country where teams are traveling into and out of on a weekly basis, then it's not a bubble.

As for your other point, saying "the NBA did it" as if that means the NFL could too is a fallacy. Comparing the facility needs of the NFL to the NBA is laughable.

@Ian ok here is where I agree with you. They should punish the Raiders.

They should suspend all players who attended that event for 14 days.
People are stupid (or reckless; or disbelieving that this virus is real and dangerous) and put others at risk. That is a big reason why we can't get rid of this thing or contain it any time soon.

Exactly this! I was honestly pissed off with all the other people being there too. So selfish.

Titans bye is week 7, Steelers/Ravens is week 7, Steelers & Ravens bye week is week 8

Titans/Steelers & Ravens bye move to week 7
Ravens/Steelers move to week 8

The virus is real but a normal way of life should not cease to exist because of it. New Zealand’s cases are on the rise again even though they shut down enough to cause their worst recession in decades. Europe didn’t get quite as dramatic as the Kiwis did, but their cases are on the rise again too. What if there is never a viable cure for this? Do we shelter in place for the rest of our lives while people die of other causes like suicide due to depression and financial ruin? What’s the plan?

There is no plan. That's why all attempts to have this particular conversation get shut down. Common sense doesn't exist anymore. We are a society of overgrown children that cannot function without a "superior" entity telling us how to do so. And all that entity(idiots on the glowing rectangle) say is to just do what your told and lick the jackboots. Covid99.7 is the War with Eurasia now. Get used to it, citizen.

To slow it down until we understand the virus better, have better tests and can develop a working vaccine and distribute it widely enough to create herd immunity and reduce COVID-19 to a relatively manageable problem

Oh wait did you really think that the fact that there is no permanent solution meant the problem is completely unsolvable and we should just eat drink and be merry? Is that how you think we handle other contagious diseases? Dude it's not 1450 anymore.

Heck even in 1450 they understood the need for quarantine, and that masks and covering prevented the spread of disease, even if they didn't know why. Quarantine jumpers were hunted with arrows in 1450

Actually that's something to think about... Anyone got a good crossbow they don't mind loaning out with no questions asked?

Anywho there is an endgame here, we're trying to slow down the pandemic until we have the tools to fight it properly. And if you read science and technology news we seem to be getting there

Are you sure it's not Oceania? We have always been at war with Oceania...

Herd immunity, eh? Want to research that one a bit more?

If there is no permanent solution, the problem is, by definition, unsolvable. So, again, what do we do? Do we shelter in place until old age or starvation takes us? For a virus in which greater than 98% of those infected make a full recovery? We know a good amount about this virus already. It most harshly impacts elderly, infirm, those with preexisting conditions, and those with a very specific Neanderthal gene. Those people should feel free to shelter in place and hope for the best. The rest of us still have to go to work and the economy still needs to function or else the amount dead and in ruin will easily surpass what this pandemic has done.

Disagree with that? Give me your solution in which the absolutely massive amount of Americans living paycheck to paycheck survives with the economy shutting down to accommodate a widespread quarantine? How are you saving small businesses and those Americans without adding trillions more to the national debt? Because $1,200 checks every 4-6 months won’t cut it.

Heck even in 1450 they understood the need for quarantine, and that masks and covering prevented the spread of disease, even if they didn't know why. Quarantine jumpers were hunted with arrows in 1450

That’s because people could get loaves of bread off of the back of the cart or via barter back then to avoid starving. If they did starve? The Crown couldn’t have cared less. As I noted above, the situations are a bit different today.

Actually that's something to think about... Anyone got a good crossbow they don't mind loaning out with no questions asked?

Why? You can’t afford to buy one?

I don’t need to read that. I invest money in those companies. I’m well aware of what stage multiple MNCs are in with testing a potential vaccine. That doesn’t mean it will be successful, it will last forever (mutation), or even that people will take it.

One thing I find remarkable is that all this went down Monday and we still don't know which players are involved.

I think it's one way NFL is doing damage control, by letting the fact that players are infected get out first, and waiting as long as possible for the media to put names and faces to those impacted.

It shows they are good at PR, maybe not so good at the virology side of this.

No, but all you have to do is wear a damn mask and not do stupid things like go to a gala in an enclosed space with a bunch of people you don't know. You can still get it after taking precautions, but at least you've done what you can to try NOT to get it. What the hell is Derek Carr, et al. thinking? He knows he's in a sport/profession/season where you can't afford to get this thing, but he goes anyway, everybody else be damned.

Players simply should not be allowed to go home during the season. They could be staying at hotels rented by the team. Spouses could stay or visit of tested and quaranteed before contact.
