OT: Earl Thomas might not be with the Ravens for much longer [8/23 update: released]

Something is off with this dude.

I was just saying the same thing a few weeks ago. But he[Logan Ryan]'s not better than our worst player in the secondary.
Depends on whether Terry Brooks makes the final cut...

This guy is a thorough scumbag and I don't want to hear it excused with "concussions" or something. On the other hand, I can't be opposed to anything that hurts the Ravens.

Do you think the Patriots did so with their most recent high-profile signing?

Newton is no way the same type problem, a different drummer for sure.

Agreed as it goes to the concept of being a "problem" of the magnitude of Earl Thomas.

Some of the things I heard about Thomas on various sports talk shows today were quite amazing. Apparently he's routinely late and once offered up the fact that he was getting his "car washed" as an excuse! Clearly he was mailing it in.

That said...behavioural changes manifest themselves in a lot of different ways and given Cam's playing style and the documented history of him getting hit at a rate far surpassing that of any other QB, ever...it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.

While there weren't graphic on-field & locker-room issues like what the Ravens saw with Thomas...Cam did get sideways with the Panthers in the end and it was surely a factor in their decision to let him go.

Does anyone plan to pursue Thomas? In only seeing tweets and reports of teams not interested or planning to pursue him. Lol

But who among us has never had their wife point a gun at their head because they were tag teaming some ‘ho with their brother at an AirBnB?
That might make him more attractive to Robert Kraft :D

Thanks for that article, unfortunately it's pure click bait.

Based on signing Gordon and AB the Pats have shown they are in the business of taking on troubled players ? Really ? If anything the conclusion to the AB saga might make the team a bit more hesitant about those type of acquisitions.

And even ignoring the history.. Thomas is totally miscast as a SS and DMac doesn't only have all the institutional knowledge of this defense but has been a better FS over the last couple of years.

But gotta get them clicks..

I wish I could make a sub-thread for this because I want to hear opinions on the Ravens releasing Thomas.

There were rumblings earlier this offseason at profootballtalk.com that the Ravens wanted to get out of this contract around the time he got caught by his wife. Now they've released him for "conduct detrimental" to the team, which seems pretty vague. I wonder what the arbitration/legal avenue will say about this, especially if he isn't signed to another big deal and therefore needs to sue to get that money.

I'm surprised, for one, that this hasn't happened more frequently or that there isn't some obvious precedent case, or maybe there is but I'm unaware.

Also, the fact that he was in a fist fight at practice...this seems like a pretty common occurrence with NFL players. Unless the Ravens specifically cited numerous instances of detrimental conduct, such as his tardiness, etc., and they are using a fight in training camp as an excuse to void his guarantee, isn't this going to be a potential problem?

I would imagine the Ravens would need to show documentation of how they've handled other players who have gotten into skirmishes at practice in setting a established precedent by their actions. Then there's also the argument that even in a practice fight, one can argue this is an extension of one's job...I mean, just in the sense that he is at the team's facility, participating in their organized activities, and this is within the norms of practice behavior. Every team has fights on the field; players are not typically released due to this and certainly not voided.

Thoughts?

What has Newton ever did or say that lead you to believe he should be checked for CTE. I never thought that CTE made you dress weird for a press conference.

I asked Florio about this ... he deleted my post.... that rat bastard...

The ratbirds must keep a log of incidents, I'm sure for all players, but if they were unhappy with ET in the first place, I'd wager they have a log of all conduct that could be considered detrimental... and i bet the dissatisfaction has been brewing for a while now... a team just doesn't bail on a guy they gave a 55m contract to just last year...

But, what ET did, its kind of meaningless, isn't it? I mean, who thinks differently about a franchise who has a guy get into a fight at practice? Its no big deal... no one really blinks twice when its brought up... sht happens... compare that to what ray rice did - THAT gave the ratbirds a big black eye ... earl thomas getting into a btchslap fest at camp? Hardly worth mentioning

I think the ratbirds are going to lose this one tbh... no way the players association lets this stand, will fight it tooth and nail... It would become way too easy to strip players of what little guaranteed money they get if they can strip it away for a fight in camp and a few tardy appearances at the practice facility...

It could even get worse...the Ratbirds acting in bad faith could cause some massive changes in standard contracts. What a bunch of **** bags. They signed the player with that risk and they should have to eat the cap hit.

I know sport unions are not real unions that i used to belong to years ago. But almost all unions require written warnings. I don't think a "coach yelling hey you two knock it off" but if a meeting was held and the player rep was there beforehand, I can see the ravens winning the case.
