From my quick investigation into things...

N95/P95 or better. NIOSH certified.

The NIOSH thing is important because otherwise you may end up with an N95 mask for woodworking but it doesn’t seal correctly.

Some masks have that hard piece in the middle that helps expel your exhale (moisture n heat) to make it more comfortable when wearing for a long time.

My search on Amazon this morning was unsuccessful to say the least. Either bad sellers with horrible reviews, crap masks, or when you go to checkout, it says those are only for healthcare workers, and you can't buy em.

No way can the CDC issue that recommendation until quality masks are available to the public.

It is not at all clear that the CDC will recommend N95 masks for general public use. I expect that they will recommend that we all wear surgical or cloth masks in public. These will greatly reduce the likelihood that the wearer will spread the virus. In the end, what happens is that an individual coughs into a mask instead of into the air.

European countries are starting to require some face covering when in public.

If I have to wear a mask, I'd like it to be one that can actually prevent the virus from going through it.

Seems like wishful thinking though. At least for a month or two until they become available.

Talking about n95 masks. I do not count those cloth/surgical as any serious self protection. Only effective to avoid spread from the wearer

Ok.

The rest of us are also interested in protecting others.

In addition, if everyone is wearing surgical masks in Walmart, I INDEED WILL be better protected.

We can make believe that having everyone wearing surgical masks won't help. That just isn't true. And it also won't help for civilians to be all using N95 masks that are needed for first responders. No countries have enough N95 masks for everyone.

I think that this is really easy to understand, and obviously be discussed by everyone one television today.

THE OLD RECOMMENDATION
Sick people should wear surgical or cloth masks to protect others. N95 masks are not recommended for general use.

NEW INFORMATION
20-25% of those who are infected don't show symptoms. Those who do show symptoms are contagious 2-3 days before showing symptoms.

NEW RECOMMENDATION (not by CDC yet)
Everyone should wear a surgical or cloth masks when outside of their houses. Even any homemade mask will help.

You're projecting. I suggest you go back and read my posts again because you took my "be careful, there are fakes" and turned it into a soapbox. Enjoy the rant but I suggested there were N95 fakes and than followed up by saying that I wasn't counting the cloth ones which do not filter out the virus completely so don't provide enough protection for yourself. I guess that means I'm uninterested in other people and said they won't help. period. You took what I said and turned it into something it wasn't. Enjoy the rest of the thread though.

It's a smart and safe move if everyone could do this. problem is we don't have access to them. But people are making their own now. Saw a home made one the other day at the grocery store

Yes there are N95 fakes. I has supposed that we were talking about the advice that CDC was going to give, and the advice being given in lots of other countries. IMO, the fact that there are are N95 masks is a deflection from that discussion. I do not expect that you go back and read all my posts when responding. When I respond, I give my thoughts regarding the post as it stands.

I apologize if you think that this thread is about points. If so, you win, 6 points to you.

But I'll ask. Do you believe that the CDC should follow the lead of some European and Asia countries and advise our citizens to wear surgical, cloth or even DIY masks whenever we leave our homes?

i wear a mask when i'm outside because:
1) it keeps me from touching my face, which the "experts" say puts me at risk of getting the virus
2) apparently, many people are asymptomatic carriers, so by wearing a mask, i'm helping protect those who might come near me
3) maybe it helps if i walk through air that is contaminated...i guess that's open to debate
4) it makes me feel just a little safer and how we feel is important, i think.

If I get the virus its going to be something I touched that someone else with it touched or somehow transferred the virus onto the surface I touched, a mask isn't going to help that. If I thought I might have it Id wear the mask but I probably wouldn't go out if that was the case.
those are all good points. i think they're suggesting that we wear them because one can have the virus but be completely asymptomatic for days, end up feeling sluggish for a few days and never even know they had it.

I would be so glad to walk into Walmart and saw everyone wearing surgical, cloth or DIY masks. This is especially true if they know that wearing the masks is protecting other people from their possible infection. How would you feel?

In the end, if we all wear masks to protect other people, we will end up protecting ourselves.

Laredo, TX is making masks mandatory when going inside.

Lately I've seen more people wearing masks, most look homemade but that cant be a bad thing, any precaution may help.

Yes. Homemade masks help - a lot. I posted this on the coronavirus thread, but I will post it here again. It gives a very good explanation of why masks work and even has a chart showing the effectiveness of various kinds of masks.

Good protective Masks will help somewhat even if no one coughs or sneezes in front of you because I personally think the virus is more aerosol than they claim meaning it not only can affect you if it hangs in the air after someone sneezes or coughs but I think it also acts as a complete aerosol in a new mutation that means if you have even the slightest compromised immune system or you smoke heavily or for a long time or are older than 65 you might get it just by standing next to an infected person who may just be normally breathing without any orafice discharge.

Masks will be worthless if it is indeed another version of aerosol form but they won't even talk about that possibility just so they won't have chaos more than it is now - don't trust your government......ever.
Normal breathing generates a small aerosol, witness your breath on a cold New England winter day. So a person who is infected and is just breathing can be shedding virus particles into the air. That said, you would probably have to be standing quite close and probably for more than a few seconds for this to be a problem.
