The Tom Brady rumor thread

Brady and Edleman are having fun with this. Could be nothing more than that.

They are not goofy Gronk.

Where there is smoke there is fire.

...and what would his motivation to do so be?
If he's annoyed by the noise surrounding his decision he simply could say my first hope and option is to finish this in New England.
Or he could say he's ready for a new challenge.

Clearly he's neither. The noise keeps he and his brand in the news cycle and only helps his leverage with the NEP and other teams.

If he comes out and shows a preference the number of teams vying for his services are reduced and his leverage along with it.

Quite frankly, Tom is behaving like he wants market value and/or to make the Patriots earn his services. Can't blame him.

Good luck with that, Tom

Yup. And how would he end it quickly if the team either isn’t offering him a contract or the contract is unacceptable?

Speaking to Peter King about the deal, Kraft said he “[Wanted] to do something elegant that would work for everybody. I had been talking to him off and on for maybe 18 months, about how I wanted him to finish his career here, and about how we both have to be smart about it. I just really want him to end his career a Patriot.”
Similar to his sentiments regarding Bledsoe.

As we know, he succeeded in securing Drew - who wound up out of town less than a year later.

Proof that we don't know what's around the corner.

My opinion is, if the Red Sox do not satisfy and keep David Ortiz, you can forget about winning anything in 2013.

I see no difference in this scenario with Brady and the Pats.

The door is, right now, still at least cracked open.

My hunch is that Bill Belichick wants his quarterback to stay here.

But Bill will do this in...his...own...good...time.

It was 2000, but I get your point.
BLEDSOE'S RECORD DEAL: 10 YEARS, $103 MILLION
ALAN GREENBERG; Courant Staff WriterTHE HARTFORD COURANT

MARCH 8, 2001 | BOSTON

With Greater Boston besieged by swirling winds and heavy snow, hundreds of flights into Logan Airport were canceled or diverted earlier this week. But not Drew Bledsoe's, which left Montana on Tuesday morning and arrived at 10:30 Tuesday night. Nor that of his agent, David Dunn, who took the Monday night red-eye from Los Angeles and arrived Tuesday morning.

And so, 2 1/2 hours of negotiating Tuesday wrapped up a process that took months. The Patriots held a press conference Wednesday to announce Bledsoe's $103 million, 10-year deal, the richest in NFL history, eclipsing the $100 million, 10-year deal Brett Favre just signed with the Packers.

I’ve thought this the entire time. I don’t even think a phone call took place between BB and TB.

Only TB knows what he wants to do. He’s probably laughing and enjoying the mediots
saying “what they know”.

Wow! I thought it was signed after the ‘99 season. The contract seemed bizarre given Bledsoe was trending in the wrong direction. The 2000 was brutal.

This isn't a rumor. This is just me. I am deeply depressed at the thought of Tom Brady going somewhere else to play. I am mad at the Pats and BB for sticking to their proverbial guns at all "costs" and not making an exception for Brady, who is a once-in-a-lifetime player who deserves once-in-a-lifetime treatment. They should have given him the two year deal he wanted last year, and they should give it to him this year (if he'll even take it at this point), and stop ****ing around. The guy had just won the Super Bowl last year and they wouldn't re-up him for two years? C'mon man! He's the best player to ever play the game, and Jared Stidham ain't no Patrick Mahomes. They are insane to let Brady go from all standpoints, including wins and losses, PR, and financial (loyalty and rewarding a stellar player who has given you everything you could hope for for the last 20 years should also count for something, but they don't, because this is a "business"). It's a financial struggle for me to renew my season tickets, but I have never seriously thought of letting them go. Until now. If they don't re-sign him I told my husband I don't think I want to renew. It's not just me. As my 87 year old Dad said, if they don't have Brady, "it will ruin everything." Have you looked at or listened to Brady this offseason? He looks as miserable as I feel. Come to think of it, he looked pretty miserable all of last year too. I wonder if the Brady ship has already sailed, thanks to BB and the Pats treating him like he is "just like any other player."

For me this is like the Freddie Lynn debacle. When I was a young kid I was a huge Red Sox fan and my favorite player was Freddie Lynn, handsome outfielder who ran headlong into the green monster to always make the play. Then this new thing called free agency happened, and Freddie decided to be a test case. He left for the Angels and I couldn't even look at the Red Sox for about 20 years.

After his stubborn "my way or the highway" Malcolm Butler crap-out in the Super Bowl, I don't trust BB to do the right thing here (he already did the wrong thing last year). God I hope I'm wrong. Do the right thing BB. Don't ruin everything.

And do the right thing Tom. Don't run off to some other team for your last one or two years in the NFL, being some other team's PR coup. Stay here with the fans who love you and want to see you retire in a Pats uniform, having capped off your incredible career always in one uniform. I couldn't bear to see one of those full page ads in the Globe from you thanking the fans for their support, unless it's to say that you are retiring (which will still make me cry).
Don't we root for the team, though? I mean, fandom is weird...it's this tribal thing, usually hardwired into us as kids, where our team is the good guys and the other teams are the bad guys. It's fun.

But individual players? When you're a kid, it's maybe easier to have that hero worship. But as an adult...I just can't see how anything Brady does would ruin anything. He'll do what's best for him. That's the other thing...for me, it's marginally more fun when players are likeable. It's easier, say, to root for Julian Edelman that some diva jerk. And Brady has represented himself really well for a long time. He's a professional. But...

Have you ever really felt over the years that he was about Boston, or New England? He's played for us, so of course, in a way. But he's wanted to excel for himself, and by extension his teammates. He doesn't care about us. Nor should he, but I sense less of a connection from Brady to the region than lots of other players.

I'm rambling a bit I guess. But I want what's best for the team. I like Brady and as a QB he's probably still the best bet. But if he leaves, he leaves. It'll be interesting, really. But it shouldn't affect your fandom at all. Just my two cents.

What is the date that Brady jumps over the moon?

I’m glad Brady kicked Darlington/Schefter in the balls. Sick of their “this isn’t a report...it’s just a report.”

Tom could end this noise very fast.

No he couldn't. Anything he says or doesn't say will get parsed to an infinite degree. There's nothing he could do to stop the media speculative frenzy.

Unfortunately some people believe that someone has to be the bad guy for ending the longest and most successful relationship in NFL history. So some are blaming Brady for every perceived slight and others are blaming BB for whatever.

One thing that is fact is that there are a bunch of bitter and entitled "Pats fans".

If it does end now we were gifted as fans to something no other fan of any other team has experienced. So there should be no ending badly crap.

Comments:

- 8 days to go, but 5 days before we get a real feel as to which way the wind is blowing, IMO. By then, the CBA will be voted in or not...and the Patriots will have 2-3 days before the open tampering period to make their final offer....

- That being said, it is possible that the Pats do what they did for Hightower....tell Brady to shop around and let the Pats match.

- I am still not sure anyone is giving Brady a MASSIVE deal (e.g. 32M+ AAV) as other teams know that they are bidding on a 43 year old QB the same the Pats are.

- As for the discussion about whether we are Brady fans or New England Patriots fans....normally I am a "root for the laundry" kind of guy, but thanks to Deflategate...Brady is the exception to the rule, IMO. Even when Brady took over as the starter, I wasn't 100% onboard... I felt that Bledsoe should have gotten a chance to earn his job back at least. It was not even until the 2001 AFC title game that I decided that Brady was the better QB going forward after watching Bledsoe play again after a long layoff.... From that point forward, I was a Brady fan...but always more of a NE Patriots fan. It was because of the sheer amount of bull$hit during the Deflategate era that I became more of a Brady fan than a NE Patriot fan over the last 5 years. I mean, I still love the team, the coaches, the players, and still have fond memories of the pre-Brady/BB era... but I have never seen such petty jealousness drag down one of Boston's Rushmore athletes....that pi$$ed me off to no end and even ended some friendships I had with people who were blinded by jealousy and hatred. So, yeah....count me as a Brady fan. Sure, if he leaves...I'll forgive him in a few years when time heals all wounds......BUT man...I want him to finish it out here. That pick six cannot be his last pass as a Patriot...even if his Dad said it would end ugly...I don't care.... Come back, Tommy! Damn it!
