I always felt he preached a bend but not break defense. Prevent defense consistently. It led to QB's like Bortles, Alex Smith, and Foles torching this defense. The defense now seems to be hell bent on takeaways. More agressive.

It's possible BB gave free reign for M.P. to call whatever plays he wanted. I have a feeling BB is more involved in the play calling now.

I think that GB game where they got royally screwed by the officials did them in. That game would have given them a lead in the division and now they’ve lost 5 straight. A mentally strong team overcomes that game but they obviously aren’t a mentally strong team, which a lot falls on Patricia.

I agree with you and i still believe that Det is still a good team but with MS out there were no hopes anymore...

I say that because a lot of the thoughts in this piece sort of echo the sentiments of a lot of people here during his tenure, so it's funny to see a similar reaction out there given all the comments from everyone while he was here.

I was thinking about it - there was a tendency here of making bad quarterbacks look good, late game opposing big plays and some tense moments. Makes you wonder how much of a factor their philosophy was during his time as coordinator, especially given what we saw from this group last year and this year.

I never really liked Patrivia’s coaching style when he was here. I don’t think it’s a coincidence our defense got much better after he left.

I’m not a fan of “Bend but don’t break” defensive theory. It drove me nuts while he coached the defense

I think something that has struck me in watching two defensive coordinators leave in quick succession is that their new teams play to the same style as the Pats did when they were here but with far inferior talent. Watching Detroit vs. Green Bay we saw Rodgers sit with tons of time, the Lions doing the controlled, stay in your pass lanes pass rush that drove people crazy during Patricia's tenure here. Death by a thousand paper cuts. Watching Miami vs. Pittsburgh we saw the Dolphins employ Cover 0 even though their secondary is trash, giving up an end of half 40 yard score on something like 4th and 15 on a simple slant pattern.

Both of their defenses would obviously improve with more talent, but it's the stylistic consistency that struck me. I think that this goes to show that Belichick allows his coordinators more autonomy than is commonly thought to shape their units' tactics. Do we remember any cover 0 during Patricia's tenure? Does Flores employ bend but don't break tactics even in talent poor Miami where Jomal Wiltz is a starting CB?

What I find interesting is how close this team was to being 4-0-1. They had KC on the ropes and GB only won due to ref interference. They had something brewing, but the wheels fell off after those two losses.
