I was being sarcastic. They don't seem to really be in play for making a deep run based on their continued flirting with above-average play without making the savvy moves needed to actually have a shot at winning a Super Bowl.

I’m sure they are trying. They are already in the top 20% if the league. Getting to a championship doesn’t happen because you want to it decide you are going to make savvy decisions.
They no doubt made the decisions they felt were best for their team, but arm chair GMs saying the moves are bad doesn’t really mean anything.

I agree that we can't always see the big picture as fans. However, one particular aspect of these trades make me highly skeptical: Bill O'Brien tried to recruit Nick Caserio as GM, as we all know, only to have to take on the duties himself when that fell through. It doesn't seem that O'Brien wanted the job, or at least he had doubts about his ability to select personnel compared to Caserio. In the end, these moves reek of desperation by O'Brien since -- by conventional wisdom -- he overpaid by a wide margin in high draft picks.

If anything, these moves feel like a short term solution to eek out another year or two of head coaching money. The moves help the Texans win now (but not likely any deeper than the divisional round) with a huge downside a few years from now when those high picks would have matured into key veterans. It would appear O'Brien knows he is on the chopping block if he fails this season and just doesn't care about the team's long-term health as long as he can stick around a little bit longer.

And I am speculating that he is doing his job and doing what’s best for the team, not that he’s screwing he future of the franchise because he is afraid of being fired after an 11-5 season.

I'm saying that you can extrapolate and surmise from prior events the reasons for things. That is the nature of speculation. If I look out the window and there are dark clouds, I may bring an umbrella because it will likely rain. I would be speculating that it might rain. Alternatively, I would be making things up if I said that Dr. Seuss made strange trades for the Texans. That is just lying.

When I suggested that O'Brien may be weighing his own interests above that of the team (which I signposted with the word "feel") that is not making things up. It is making an educated guess from the evidence at hand that he is not acting in the best of faith. I also don't believe this makes him a bad guy; rather, the team is crazy -- in my opinion -- to give a coach who is likely on the hot seat the keys to the castle. I can't ask Bill O'Brien to work against his own self-interest.

Since it is a forum, then yes -- absolutely -- feel free to disagree with my speculation and claim it is absurd. And I would ask why you feel that way, not out of anger but general curiosity.
