David Andrews hospitalized for blood clots (merged)

Is it different that it is a clot in the lung vs elsewhere?
Meaning in terms of cause and likelihood if recurrence?
The clot likely (not always) came from the legs - traveled through the veins, through the right side of the heart, and lodged in the lungs. Treatment is generally the same (anticoagulation) unless the pulmonary emboli were large and severe (might give an actual clot dissolving drug in that case).

You can't play football on blood thinners. The question regarding his blood clot(s) to the lungs is the amount of lung tissue that is compromised. A person can have a lot of little ones which compromise breathing, or one big one that does the same. The blood thinners don't dissolve the clot but stabilize it (keep it from getting bigger). The body then resorbs the clot over time. If you are breathing OK at the time of the diagnosis, you're typically going to be OK, but no football for a minimum of six months.

Blood clots in the lungs require serious blood thinners such as warfarin. Utilizing said blood thinners can result in life ending blood loss situations when it comes to getting skin cuts of marginal concern to anyone else. This is potentially career ending.

Geez, your postername.....
.

Don't really feel comfortable talking about his replacement here. Maybe in another thread...idk.
I'm sure he's getting the best care at the hospital. Hopefully they have him stabilized.

This is a football forum, so why not.

Is their something wrong with the site....because now their is 3 funnies in this thread. If your reading this...please verify your emot-things

I don't know about the other two posters, but given his history, I'm pretty sure @Triumph hit the exact button he wanted to hit.

.

Well, since I’ve gone onto WebMD and am therefore now an expert, it looks like there are two types of blood clots, one of which is fairly superficial and not that big of a deal. Let’s hope it’s that kind.

Any Drs here? What generally causes these besides long plane flight?

Just sad news.. hopefully not career threatening.

Dehydration and stasis can. Remember, during the 1st Gulf War one of the embedded network reporters died from being cooped up to long in a roasting hot APC.

I hadn't taken a long plane flight in years before I was diagnosed with DVT. I did pull all nighters in front of the computer, so maybe that did it. Idk. Vascular Dr. didn't either.

By all accounts a really good, normal guy. Wish him & his family nothing but the best.

Long shot, maybe Froholdt? Asking a ton there but not sure the other options on the team are much better w/out moving starters around.

That is for vein clots in your legs. Clots in the lung are serious and a big deal

TPA if severe, otherwise warfarin or its progeny. Sounds like you’re right and it might be a pulmonary embolism.

This horrible, I really hope he will be okay. Big loss for the team but his health is far more important !

i'm seeing a correlation here...its all OL that have these clots in lungs...that doesn't make any sense does it? if its diet/size wouldn't DLs be in same boat?

?Yes.

- Orthopedic procedures, with or without immobility post op.

- Any prolonged immobility really can do it....pregnant woman on bed rest, long hospitalization (which is why we give most patients shots in the abdomen or use leg compression devices when they are too sick to move frequently), elderly nursing home patients with dementia.

- Any cancer can cause a “pro-thrombotic” state. If you may recall, Menino was hospitalized for blood clots in his lungs near the end of his life. That was most likely cancer related.

- In women, a combination of smoking and birth control pills.

- Some medications (steroids that treat inflammation, for example).

- Finally, there are a number of genetic conditions which place patients at high risk for recurrent clots. An extensive blood panel will almost certainly be ordered during his hospital stay, to rule out these conditions.

While blood clot from a long flight in the absence of a genetic predisposition will lead to a 3-6 month (usually 6) course of blood thinners (“anticoagulation”), patients who test positive for certain genetic abnormalities which predispose to clots will usually require lifelong anticoagulation.

He is likely done for the season. If his genetic testing is positive, his career is probably over.

have there been other players who had clots?
