I appreciate your post, and I agree with at least most, if not all, of it. I just think that people here have developed the notion that what's happened here under Brady is normal and easily duplicated because of good coaching, when NFL history makes it clear that such is not usually how it works.

QBs play longer because rules, technology, training, and recovery have changed. It's not because "40 is just a number", or any other idiotic defense to the fact of aging.

Yes, but at $15 million. His new deal is $23 million which is important now and jacked up the dead money in 19, 20 and 21 if he were to be traded or be cut. That is meaningful as they make decisions about players in camp, and any free agents or veterans from other teams that get cut, particularly those before the deadline who teams want to give a chance to catch on with a team with a need at certain positions. Don't be surprised if the Pats take a look at a couple of those guys at TE, WR and OL after the 2nd full week of preseason games. The Pats needed to know how much of the cap Brady would account for this year.

You’re right. Tom is super happy to not get a guaranteed mutiyear contract that keeps him a Patriot until retirement at a reasonable price.

Look, the Patriots did this in the context of putting together a roster for 2019 with some very competitive position groups and a couple of holes at receiver, TE and LT. This deal locks in Brady at $23 for this year and sets up 20 and 21 while they sift through the rest of the players.

The Patriots' leverage is that they can decide to walk away, too. If Brady and Don Yee get little or no interest above the $30-32M for 20 and 21 from a team that makes sense for Tom Brady, they'll get the hometown premium in this case at or near the level in this contract.

I think they'll sort out the guaranteed, bonus and incentive money in Brady's promised $62 million for 20 and 21 at some point during the season.

Unless Brady WANTS to hit free agency. Even if it’s only to hold the the Pats feet to the fire by fielding offers from other teams. There’s nothing the Pats can do to stop him from testing the market if that’s what he wants, they have no leverage.

Even if he wants to hit free agency, they’ll still be in contact about fielding offers and negotiating the entire time. They’d have to really lowball him for him to want to leave.

If Brady wanted to go to another team, I’m guessing that he could’ve made that happen many times during his time here.

Yea I don't think he is super happy. I dont even think he is happy. That doesn't mean he is unhappy. Like he said, it is what it is. He is ambivalent at this point. Like he said, he's got 2019 and he's focusing on 2019. He knows that if he plays lights out, he is free to do what he wants in 2020 w/o having to worry about being tagged.

The contract gets voided on March 18, 2020. The Patriots and Brady can get a lot done between now and then.
