Mike Freeman - Gronk comeback?

I wonder if this would create problems with the league. I mean even if he comes back at his old cap hit (which I would doubt) we basically cheated our way to temporarily more cap room to get some other players in there. Then we extend Brady in August and have created the room again.
He would come back at a pro-rated amount from his previous cap $ -$2m dead cap which is $9,859,375/ 16 = $616, 210.93 a game.

I can't see them paying him $600k a game.

so this is not something that can be negotiated?

I think so. IIUC, if Gronk returns the 2019 scheduled cap hit come back at a prorated basis. So if he came back after Game 8, the NEP would be charged $4,929,687. What I'm not 100% sure of is can they redo his deal and pay him like $3m for 8 games and/or guarantee some of it and push that to 2020?

Financially they can make it work. Just not sure what they'd be willing to do or what Gronk would be willing to play for.

If they expect a big impact for 8 games plus playoffs and they have the cap room (which they will have), why not?

I don't disagree.

At this point I don't think much has changed with Gronk. I think he still needs a break from the pounding and the BB system. He also won't take a huge pay cut or play somewhere else.

Maybe $4m for 6-8 games gets it done? Not bad for ~2 months work. I'm pretty confident he can put on 10-15 lbs in a month and get in game shape. He seems like hes still working out and doing cardio. Just not doing the powerlifting/bulk adding work.

You asked a question about why he might want to come back. I gave an answer, which I gladly admit is speculation.

None of us have the first clue what Gronk is really thinking, nor do we know his true health status. There really is no need for you to be so pissy over my speculation and your weeping and wailing about him spending his life in a wheelchair has zero basis in reality.

The money part is easily rectified by Brady bestowing some of his pay to Gronk. Done it before with other players.

If youre truly retired and have closed the door, you file retirement papers with the NFL. You dont ride the fence in interviews on whether you might change your mind once the season begins. And, you dont show up to be filmed catching footballs from a QB who wants to you back on the team.

Brady and Gronk are playing the media and fans like a fiddle. It began last year and Brady wouldnt waste his time if Gronk is truly gone because there would be no purpose in keeping the charade alive. I dont recall a single time where Brady has been a practical joker.

He officially retired. That is what he is really thinking.

We do not know of his current health status but we do know of his history of injuries.

When has he ridden the fence?

Playing catch at a charity event does not serve as evidence that he is coming back to play full contact football.

It is some fans and various members of the media continue to circulate rumors that he will come back.

What does it even mean to "officially retire"? Announce his retirement? Gimme a break. Has he signed his retirement papers? Of course, those aren't exactly irrevocable either.

Again, just the other day Gronk was evasive and vague about playing again.

He said that he is "enjoying retirement" and that "I said what I said about the matter"

NO emphatic "I am not going back" NO reaffirming "You wont see Rob Gronkowski playing in the NFL again"

Fans are going to take what Gronk says and use it to support their own belief.

The simple fact is Gronk has not once said he is not playing in 2019. It doesn't mean he is, it means he hasn't said he isn't.

There certainly is the element of Gronk just trolling ,being a flake or clinging to ways of staying relevant because he knows once he says he's done....it's over

Wrong. When did he officially retire?
Yep. I don't recall any reports which say Gronk has filed his retirement papers with the league office.

The only thing that has occurred is the NEP have placed Gronk on the Reserve/Retired list. They can remove him from the list at any point.

Obviously.

It's not cheating if you follow the rules. This reminds me of Jim Harbaugh crying about the Patriots cheating when running the "Baltimore" and "Raven" plays (where eligible players declared themselves ineligible yet lined up in positions very similar as to when they were eligible) in the (2014?) playoffs. Just doing what's legal. If you don't like it, change the rules. Which they did - after Harbough started trying to imitate the Patriots. :)

In this case, I don't even think the Patriots or Gronk are trying to manipulate anything. It just may work out in the Patriots favor.

For the record, I don't believe Gronk is coming back.
