Julian Edelman doesn't tend to get the credit and respect he deserves around the league, but one former player took notice in a recent ESPN segment, putting him ahead of some notable names which created some controversy.

    Brady is a straight shooter.

He is not going to lay his credibility out there unless the odds are in his favor. Not enable Gronk to play everyone. Its all Hollywood theater building suspense until the cavalry arrives and saves the day.

    The TErminator will be back.

Gronk officially retired. He filed the paperwork with the league. The Patriots received cap space after 3/24. The Patriots wouldn't have gotten the Cap Space from the league if he hadn't retired.

You only get placed on the list if you've filed the paperwork. And the league certainly doesn't give teams the cap space from a player if they haven't filed the paperwork.

Yea the playing catch with Brady was weird but Tom could easily couch it as, "Schedules worked out and I needed a Gronk fix."

Good points. I wonder where people get the idea that there is some sort of neutral or "limbo" status in the NFL. (?)

    Could someone cite an example?

I don't think that is true.

Reserved/Retired means the team maintains the rights of the player. See Jason Witten.

Are they remaking the Terminator (2)? Doesn't require much acting and he's got the gun down alright :)

That paperwork is not binding from the player’s standpoint. You can call it “official” all day long but that doesn’t change the fact he can change his mind at any time he darn well feels like.

Right. It's not like once they sign it they are banished to the Phantom Zone only to have a nuclear blast set them free

Someone posted earlier in this thread that we do not know what his intentions are.
As of now they are to retire.

    Some people are funny.

First a group of posters were saying there is no written proof that Gronk actually retired.

Now that it has been determined that he actually did file papers, the papers are not binding.

In his time away from football is irrelevant.

What is "neutral time"? What does that mean?

At any rate he was under the contractual control of the Dallas Cowboys (just like Gronk). He may not have been collecting a W2 but he was 'Boys property unlike Romo who was released.

Please cite where it was reported Gronk filed papers and is officially retired in the eyes of the NFLPA and the league office.

Could you show me anywhere that I said that Reserve/Retired means the team gives up the rights to the player? No. You can't. You're conflating something that wasn't said or implied.

Reserve/Retired means that the player has filed their paperwork with the NFL and will no longer count against the Salary Cap for their team. It nullifies the current contract that the player was under but the team still keeps the rights to said player.

A perfect example is Jason Witten. Witten retired while still under contract to the Cowboys. He filed his paperwork with the league. That is why the Cowboys got Salary Cap space returned to them. Witten had to file paperwork to return to the NFL. He also had to sign a new contract.

Junior Seau had been released by Miami in March when he announced his retirement in August. It was only after the Patriots reached out to him that he filed paperwork to return to the NFL. But it was because Miami had released him that they didn't retain Seau's rights.

How exactly is the league going to give the Pat's cap relief in X amount of $ if there is NO paper record of the transaction?
