The fact that the Patriots received Cap Credit should be citation enough. Not sure why that isn't clicking for you.

The reality is that we almost never hear that a player has "filed retirement paperwork" with the NFL. We only hear that they've retired.

Please cite where a player can be put on the Reserve/Retired list by a team without said player having filed the appropriate paperwork with the NFL..

Look at the link I gave blue cat. Says it.

To reciprocate, please provide me with the link that says paperwork must be filed with the NFLPA and the NFL to be on the reserved/retired list.

    Sure we do.

Brett Favre Files Retirement Paperwork With The NFL

Romo hasn’t filed retirement paperwork yet (and it doesn’t matter)

Quite frankly I'm wondering if "retirement papers" is more symbolic than an actual binding agreement.

The title of the article is "Jason Witten Coming Out OF RETIREMENT To Play for Dallas Cowboys Again."

    Definition of RETIREMENT

DaBruinz already answered this. It is an established fact. Which NFL team has him on their roster? He is not on the Patriots roster:

Just because a player is not on the roster it does not mean they are officially retired.

    Not really.

    Lets keep this debate simple.

You and DaBruinz are saying he signed paperwork making it official.

I say all Gronk did was tell the team he was retiring and subsequently he is not on the roster nor is he counting towards the cap.

What is the paperwork? What did he sign? Does it even matter?

Sorry but you two have not explained that.

Quite right. I would have thought that the cap relief would have been a decisive point, but this seems to be as bad as arguing with Andy Johnson. At any rate, the vast majority of us are convinced. :)

This is no different than the Pats declining to pickup a players option allowing him to be a FA and then the Pats resign the same player later on.

    See Danny Shelton.

@robertweathers what is your point? Are saying Gronk's retirement is a hoax? Stop being so silly!!!

I do not have access to the documents however here are the man's words:

Rob Gronkowski announces his retirement from the NFL on Instagram

Patriots place Rob Gronkowski on reserve/retired list

Could all of this change? Sure. Is it likely to change? Speculate away...

I can’t speak to what other people said, all I can do is speak to what I said. I merely asked what does it mean to “officially” retire? Is publicly announcing a retirement “official”? Is filing the paperwork “official”?

You can call it “official” all you want and that does nothing to change the fact that whether you announce it publicly or not and whether you file the paperwork or not, none of the above is actually binding.

This is where your mistake is. A player can be given the roster designation “reserve/retired” without necessarily filing his retirement paperwork.

I neither know nor care whether Gronk filed his retirement papers. All I am saying is the fact that the Patriots got cap relief does not prove that he did.
