The real worst case scenario is that he sits until week 11 and then the Patriots have to pay him $1 million a game for the rest of the season (i.e., another Mankins deal.) Evidently that possibility seemed too disruptive to attempt a tag-and-trade. It seems pretty unlikely that the Patriots just walked away from adding draft picks without exploring all possible options.
