DL Mike Pennel and TE Matt LaCosse sign...

Is Lacosse the blocking TE du jour? Or can he catch a little?
He is a catching TE. He was let go by Denver because he was not a blocker.

Thinking Pennel is the first of two dominos to fall at DT. The second one will likely come in the draft. We needed a run stuffer and we got a run stuffer.

Pennel is a nice pick up. With his numbers progressing, should only keep going up especially in BB's Def.

One of the most important pieces that allow us to run a nickel base.
Now we can either get another fatass or more of a 3 tech in the draft.

I like LaCosse as a guy who's in the mix as an offensive TE2. That tells me that the team isn't 100% they'll have Gronk back next year and wants to make sure their offense doesn't suffer too much for his absence.

If they do bring Gronk back I wouldn't be all that surprised if he played more of a support role, throwing blocks and drawing coverage to create openings for LaCosse in 2 TE sets. If it works the door should be wide open for both Gronk and LaCosse because defenses can't cover everyone and need to account for Edelman and our receiving backs too

And of course, the door is still wide open for the Patriots to draft a heavy duty TE1 for LaCosse to play second fiddle to.

I have no problem with the Patriots moving toward heavy sets and splitting out LaCosse (if he's shown he's capable) ala Kelce against DBs. If Gronk comes back and the Pats pick up another blocking TE, to complement Edelman, Gordon (hopefully) and our RB stable of Michel, White and Burkhead, I'm less concerned about the O than others. If they can find 2 more reliable WRs to run opposite Minitron, then this team will have come together nicely.

Belichick's penchant for zigging when the NFL zags is one of the reasons why the Pats stay ahead of the curve.

The guaranteed salary isn’t a big deal because it would be offset if he played for different team. The $300k signing bonus is notable, though. They plan on him sticking around.

Ideally, we draft Lawrence from Clemson in the first round and sign Philon from San Diego.

We let the three duke it out in spring training, remembering that at least one will probably spend the year on injured reserve. (See 2018 draft class members not named Michel)

Each signing seems to be a solid depth move. Familiar case of the Pats filling the roster with players from teams they are familiar with. LaCosse could be solid in the number two TE role and Pennel looks to be a workmanlike plugger who could be a steal.

More average signings today.

Those relatively cheap middle class signings and trades are what keeps us in the playoffs despite picking late in the draft year in and year out.

KVN, Hogan, McClellin, Guy, Simon..

Having clever versatile guys is the basis to be a gameplan team that can morph and reinvent themselves from week to week. And not 1-2 splash signings.

So...by all accounts Mike Pennel is an underrated DT who had a very good year last year? So why did the Jets let him go is what I don't understand, but then again it is the Jets so I guess it's normal to not understand?

I’m excited about Pennel and looking forward to another nice addition via the draft, probably two. Glad to see them address an area of weakness.

Gotta pay for your splash signings somehow.

Typical Pats FA season, put a few offers out there for the bigger names.. but focus on players who can do more than one thing.. and then believing they can coach up and develop these players who look like they are languishing in other systems..

Sometimes it works, but some times it doesn't, either way it is low risk and possible reward..

Versatile players are of great value to this team...

Gotta say I wasn't even aware of LaCosse existing until yesterday. Curious signing.

Man, you killed these guys. Are you calling them average Joe's? :D
