Here’s what Patriots defensive back Marcus Jones had to say as he spoke to reporters on July 25, 2025.
On what he makes of the walkthrough on Day 3:
“Smooth. It’s one of those situations to where we’re not physically doing anything taxing. But mentally, we have to make sure we get through the checks and get the calls and everything like that. So it’s very important.”
On how it’s been having a nickelback as a coach:
“Yeah, it’s very important. Nowadays, people have a lot of schemes to where the nickels have a primary role in the defense. And now we also do corner stuff, but then also safety stuff at the same time. So we’re getting accounted for in the box and things like that. So our drills and everything are a little different from the safeties and also corners.”
On if there are any differences in playing in the slot in this defense versus the defenses he’s been in in the past
“I would say the nickel defense, it’s always different from different teams and different schemes that you end up being with. I would say at the end of the day, man is man and everything like that. You always have a gap whenever it comes down to the situation of certain coverages and everything. So, I wouldn’t say it’s always so different, but then again, it’s not the same scheme.”
On if there have been any conversations about playing offense and if he’s interested:
“I’m primarily focusing on defense and special teams right now. If that time comes, then it comes, but I’ll be ready for it.”
On how they prepare defensively to be attacked in the running game:
“When it comes down to it, we all have our roles to fill. At the end of the day, I’m not scared to hit nobody, as you guys probably see. But at the end of the day, it’s football, and it’s physicality that comes with the game. You got to do what you got to do.”
On special teams and with how teams approach kickoff, what he’s focusing on:
“Yeah, at the end of the day, I want more returns. You know what I mean? And I think teams want that as well. So that’s why the rules are changing and things like that. So hopefully, there’s more returns in the game.”

On the fact we haven’t seen him in the new kickoff returns yet in the game, and if he’d like to add that part ot his game since last year, the coaches said he had enough on his plate with defense and punt returns and if he feels like he could handle it:
“At the end of the day, if I’m back there, just know I’ll be ready for whoever Coach tells to be back there. But at the end of the day, whatever the team needs me to do, then I’m going to do it.”
On a day like today with no pads and with everything slowed down, what a successful day is for him, and what is it he goes back and looks at:
“A successful day, at the end of the day, it’s training camp, and it’s early. So at the end of the day, we’re going to have mistakes and everything, but there’s always room for improvement, even whenever there’s good days. We want to be better. So that’s kind of the standard that we have in our room. And like I said, it’s early, so there’s going to be some mistakes, but we got to make sure to prevent those mistakes for later on down the line.”
On what it’s like having Terrell Williams back:
“Great. The meetings are great and everything. And then the enthusiasm that he brings to the room, and just letting us know that this is our standard, and we got to make sure we stay with it.”
On the fact he’s gone through a lot of changes the last couple of years and going into the last year of his contract, if he’s given any thought to being here long-term and if he wants to be here long-term:
“I definitely want to be here. But at the end of the day, I’m worried about this season. I’m not really worried about the end of the season, everything like that. I’m in training camp, and then we’ll get to preseason and then kind of go on from there. But I’m not really focused on that right now.”
On if he threw in any new wrinkles into his offseason routine:
“I would say my girlfriend got me a little bit into Pilates, but I’m taking that one day at a time, as you guys may know. So that’s the main thing I’ll say. I tried, but now just making sure I stay up to date and take care of my body is the main thing.”
On if he talked to Christian Gonzalez (who is into Pilatis) about that:
” Yeah. So me and Gonzo, we’ve get a lot of conversations about it, but not too much in detail about it right now.”
On if it’s a bit of a trauma bomb there?
“Oh, yeah. Just a little bit. There’s certain exercises, that I’m just like, ‘I don’t think my body is supposed to do that.'” Marcus, going back to your question about playing run
On going back to the defense and being at the center of the attack sometimes, if he’s stronger now than when he first came into the league:
“I would definitely say so. Frank is doing a great job this year and everything, implementing what we need to do when it comes down to strength-wise, spreading out the days, knowing when we should do upper body, things like that, and then strength work. I would say Frank is doing A1 whenever it comes to that.”
On his thoughts on Robert Spillane and what stands out about him:
“Yeah, he’s a commander. You could definitely tell he’s going to be one of the captains on this team. When it comes down to talking to the defense and everything, the standard that he has and everything is great for our defense, and then also the communication barrier. He wants to make sure that everyone’s on the same page. As a Mike linebacker or just a leader of this defense, that’s what you need.”
