Patriots Trade for Michael Bennett

No, you don't like his politics.

I do like his politics, but the thing about the elderly person is suspect. The cop thing was bs though. Footage full of cuts.

Bennett could make a nice TE #3

Michael and Martellus Bennett always have wanted to play together. Now that the Patriots are trading for Michael, Martellus is interested in coming out of retirement to join his brother in New England, per a source. Then would be the McCourty and Bennett Bros. in New England.

And there it is....

And there it is....

Ohhhhh hell yeah. I wonder if they thought of this move as bringing in Marty too. Not that it wasn’t a good one standing alone. Hopefully Marty is much healthier a year removed from the game.

I love this trade.

The reality is that Flowers is currently THE top rated pass rushing FA available. He is GOING to get paid! That means in the $15-17MM range/yr. With only $24MM in current cap space, that was NOT going to happen in NE. I wish Trey the best, he was a great Patriot, but like so many before him, he wasn't going to be signed to a max contract here.

What Bennett brings, we hope, will be similar production. Maybe not what he brought in his prime, but even last season he proved to be a top creator of pass pressures. (top 5 IIRC).

But the reality is that Bennett will be a versatile place holder for a year. A guy who can give the Pats some production while they develop the NEXT Trey Flowers from among their next significant rookie class. When you aren't drafting in the top 10, it can take a year or two to develop pass rushers. Guys you get where the Pats pick have success more because they develop great techniques and understanding of defensive concepst, than pure physical ability. That takes time. No one was predicting any great things for Flowers after HIS first year. It took 2.5 full years of development before we started to see the Trey Flowers who was going to be the top pass rusher available in FA. We needed someone who could be the stopgap while that unknown person develops. Enter Michael Bennett

BTW- I'm now more convinced than ever than the first Pats pick in April will be a DLman of some type because by 2020 they will need an impact player on that level to be ready to produce.

There are still some in-house options such as Deatrich Wise, Derek Rivers, Kenoa Davis, and etc...those guys have now had 2 years in our system and might still take a step forward.

Not sure how much this impacts any decision on Flowers. Not even sure about Clayborn. Something to consider: Bennett can play a wicked DT.

The money's not bad as is, but the baggage (age, attitude, incidents) sucks.
and he and Schiano dont get along at all. could be interesting

I could be wrong, but I don't think I was replying to your post...

Nah you weren't but I was pointing out it's a more nuanced situation with him than whether you're left/right politically.

$7m is going to impact something.

They've still got 17m, haven't restructured Brady yet, haven't done anything with DMac yet, and we still don't know about Gronk (who's selling his Boston condo, apparently).

It depends on how much they want to spend on the DL, sure, but had they optioned either of Shelton or Brown, the hit would have been the same.

my biggest concern is how he gets along with Greg Schiano. he's had some negative things to say about playing under him in Tampa. the more I think about this trade. I don't like it. Michael Bennet is a humungous dbag. hopefully, he doesn't make it out of camp.

My point is I don't give 2 flying f###s what any player's politics are. If he can play, I like it. And he can still play.

My point is people aren't necessarily upset about his politics. There's nothing political about shoving an old person. That's a legitimately concerning thing. I like the trade from a football perspective but he might be a scumbag and there are naturally fans who might have a problem with that.
