Emmanuel Sanders won’t take a paycut in Denver, looks like he’ll be released

Too old & too expensive. No thanks.

I don’t remember Sanders bashing the Pats? The only two ex Steelers I remember who made “cheaters” comments were Deebo and Clark.

As I remember it Sanders commented that the Pats should have paid him the money instead of Amendola. I don't care for those kind of comments.

Sanders in general talks too much and I wouldn't want him, but if the Pats think he's worth it then it's okay.

Until a couple of years ago, I used to watch pretty much every game played in the NFL. Furthermore, we're talking about a Broncos receiver, which means that we saw him play against the Patriots and in a lot of prime slot games during the Manning era, as well as in the playoffs. Your analysis is crap because you can't keep your bias under control. That's on you, not on some imagined failure of me to watch Thomas play.
What bias? I don’t like the Broncos but I would still take Sanders. He was playing at a much higher level and is the same age and had the same injury at almost the same time. The main difference is he is still good. I don’t know where you’re getting this notion of a bias. It’s not just me who thinks he’s soft either. Apparently both Albert Breer and Troy Brown questioned whether he was tough enough to play here when the trade rumors flared up before the deadline. But anyways keep yammering in about a “bias”.

This isn't really true.

I've been reading a lot on the subject. The biggest reason many don't come back is that this is typically an injury that happens near the end of a career and, until recently, marginal players who got hurt has no shot at coming back. Now, Brent Grimes, Sherman, Suggs (2), and even some NBA players are getting back in the game.

At least, based on the few articles I've read.

How come puttsburgh can draft a fire hydrant and the fire hydrant becomes a 1,000 yards per season receiver.

And we draft guys who should be 1,000 yard per season receivers but turn out to be fire hydrants!!!! (Johnson, Jackson, etc etc etc)

A lot of that is because of the way Rothlesberger extends plays (or used to). Covering a speed guy for 7 seconds...well.

In the Pats' system with Brady, you get a look when it's your turn in the progression, and if you're not open, his eyes are elsewhere immediately. I really think that's why so few can cut it here, and why it's a lot more telling to put up big numbers with Brady than with a guy like Ben.

It's similar to the DE position here. You want to be a sack-king? Go somewhere else or shut up and set the edge.

Probably yet another reason for the incredible dynasty.

Comments:

a.) It's all about dollars vs. production for me. My question is what is Sanders worth? Last two years, he has appeared in 12 games. 47 rec in 2017 and 71 in 2018 with about the same amount of targets. So, it was QB play in Denver then? He is due to make 10M in 2019 and is 32 years old. I'd say the value is a pretty good one for a mid-tier guy hurt by bad QB play and injuries (top end of WR market is about 18m/year).

b.) Then it is all about compensation for the Broncos....what would Denver take? A 3rd? Sign me up....more than that....not sure.

c.) Then there's the massive problem of Edelman's contract. Edelman is our best WR and right now arguably our best receiver with Gronk slowing down a bit. We would need to give Edelman a raise, IMO. So, that needs to be factored in Sanders' cost, IMO....unless we roll with a rookie WR or a WR still on his rookie deal (e.g. Cooks).

d.) As for DeMaryius Thomas...I just looked up his stats and was surprised he did a 59rec/677 yard/5TD season last year which is pretty good for "an old man". By comparison, Chris Hogan has never had more than 41 rec/680 yards/5TDs in any season. Thomas is 2" taller and weights 20 more lbs. than Hogan....and is only a year older. He would help a lot in the Red Zone and create separation with his height.

e.) Golden Tate @ 15M/year.....doesn't surprise me....that should be his market rate given the mileage on his body.
Won’t cost us anything to acquire him, nobody is paying Sanders 10 mill next season, he’ll be cut.

Right, like it's always been. Sanders is on the wrong side of 30. Maybe he'll make it back but there's little hope he'll be anything but a shell of himself.

To me the way forward at WR is pretty clear. Sign Dorsett and Amendola. That gives you 3 guys Brady is comfortable with and they won't cost much.

After that worry about looking for another option. Maybe a high draft pick or a FA if a quality one becomes available for the right price. But I don't see it is something they will be able to use a lot of money on unless Gronk decides to walk.

So, as an exercise in random thinking, how much would it cost to get the Denver band back together, and what about a WR crew of...

Thomas
Sanders
Edelman
Dorsett
Draft pick WR

?
1. No on Thomas for a number of reasons. First he isn't coming off just an injury but an Achilles tear, and that is a difficult one for any receiver to come back from, especially one that old. 2nd he's always been a bit soft. Third he's never been a precise route runner, and 4th I think there are better options out there.

2. Sanders has always been a favorite of mine. One of my great regrets is the Pats not going just a little bit higher for him when they tried to grab him as a RFA. Having him here the last 5 or so years would have been epic. Think of him, JE and Gronk..

But in the end, he isn't coming here this off season for the same reason he mentions in his tweet. Sanders is an eight figure WR, and he's not coming here to play for 7. It's as simple as that.

3. I'm all on board in picking a WR any time in the second day of the draft, and it wouldn't surprise me if its in the "dreaded" 2nd round.

4. As to the rest, I'm fine having Dorsett back. he has a role that he's played well as the 3rd or 4th WR. But given the choice of one or the other I'd rather have CPaterson. He has the better chance to go beyond the role he carved out for himself in 2018. (jmho)

5. If we DO go after an established FA WR this off season, the #1 guy, I'd like to see them make a move on is Golden Tate. First he is a couple of years younger than Sanders and Thomas, and 2nd he'd come relatively cheaper. (maybe in the 7-9 range). The guys been a precision route runner his entire career and would like be the most likely to fit in our system of all the talked about FA WR's

Sanders isn't getting 8-figures coming off an Achilles tear.

Golden Tate, meanwhile, has stats comparable to Jarvis Landry and wants big money. I don't think he'll get it, since he's 31, but he's way more likely to see 8-figures than Sanders is, I'd bet.

Hm? Tate will be significantly more expensive than Sanders and Thomas unless I’m misinerepting you.

I am not sure it is fair to compare a WR1 who has been averaging over 140 targets every year since 2012 with the raw numbers of Hogan who only once went past 60 (2012: 61).

Thomas *was* a #1 WR. Right now, he is at best a #2.....and would be replacing Hogan here in the offense...so....

Dunno....10M a year is a good price for a WR right now with the cap at 160M+....its only 6.25%. If he were an UFA...I think he could command more...but he's older...so I dunno...its close.

Off a torn Achilles in December?

I would think that Desean Jackson would be cheaper and seems like a better fit. My dream scenario would be to pick up him and Dola in FA and hope that Marquise Brown's foot injury has him slide down to us at 32 in the draft.
