Was that the correct ruling? How much time does the defense get to substitute to respond? I guess if we don’t give them enough time it’s delay of game?

The ref stands over the ball to give them time to change personell.

I realize the refs hold play to give the defense time to change, but how much time? couldn't the defense drag its heals causing the delay, which is basically what happened on this play?

That one confused me as well.
I will have to go back and look, but if my memory is correct, the official would not allow them to snap it until after the play clock expired.

I was hoping for an explanation but never got one

I thought the rule was that the ref has to hold the ball for one second only.

Not that they have to make sure the cheifs have their entire personal on the field for 20 seconds.

The rule is very vague:

The Umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions.

So it is entirely a judgment by the ump.

It didnt really matter because we wanted the extra 5 yards anyway.

Should have gone for it if that were the case, can’t punt fourth and one around the 45.

Of course it mattered. It was less than 5 to go. Snapping would have got a 12 men on th e field and a 1st down.
I meant the delay.
It’s unreasonable to expect a 12 men penalty when you run 11 guys on and they do the same by do it slower
Clearly the ref will not allow a snap until the guys trying to get off the field do.

To me, that's the point. The Patriots did it quickly and efficiently, as a way to put stress on the Chiefs to do the same. If the Chiefs can't respond quickly, the Pats deserve to be rewarded for their work here. The refs shouldn't protect the Chiefs from their own lack of preparation and/or execution.

If that were the case you could get the penalty every time because you decide to switch. They can’t be as fast responding as you are doing.
That would be a terrible rule.

I think 12 men on the field can be challenged. If so I’m sure pink stripes would let BB know and our drive would continue. It’s unreasonable for the ref to hold the ball until the play clock expires.

The rule says he has to give the defense time to get on/off the field. If we wait too long and the play clock expires the ref shouldn’t ignore that responsibility.

That was an odd play, I'd like to know more about what was going on but it seemed the Pats were about to catch KC with 12 men but the ref wouldn't let them snap the ball in order to get the penalty? Then the clock expired and the pats got the penalty? If the ref is going to do that shouldn't he at least reset the play clock and not let it expire?

This strategy makes no sense unless the Pats are practicing something for a future game

THe team about to punt the ball needs to factor how much time is left on the play clock before they pull the 11 man switcheroo. If they wait until too little time is left on the play clock they risk a delay of game penalty, because the defense will not have adequate time to change theor personnel.
In this case the Pats made the switch with too little time left for defense to change personnel before play clock hit zero
