Rapoport: Dolphins "focused" on Pats' DC Brian Flores

Agree. I believe 2/3rd of teams and specifically owners are morons

It's a fact. Situations can change too. On the other hand, if you go to a good organization, they are probably on the way down and getting old. If they struggle at first, it's your fault.

People are pointing to Miami as a bad place to coach:

Nice Saban - Has one of the best jobs in football.
Adam Gase: Already hired again.
Todd Bowles: Got a second gig.
Jimmy Johnson: TV Celebrity
Don Shula: Owns his own chain of restaurants.

Flores would be a fool not to take this.

There's nothing saying he'll actually except the job. Granted I'm sure the pay is 10X what he's making in his current role. But the downsides are the Fins are a dysfunctional organization, you're in the same division as Bill, their GM hasn't exactly lit it up in the draft, granted Tannenbaum probably had final say, and if you fail you only get so many chances.

He might be better served to get a raise here and then get the added provision like Josh did that he gets to see more of the inner workings of the draft process, contracts, salary cap management, etc to better set himself up in the future with a better organization.

Only two ever got a HC gig again. One is Saban, and even then, that was a college HC gig.

He should be very careful with this offer. Call me lunatic but the Dolphins can back out of this deal very far in the hiring process just to payback the Patriots for what Josh did last year. I don't doubt that looked bad between the owners inner circle.

Now more into the reality, what's the Dolphins QB situation? That's very important. First year coaches who have less than 4 or 5 wins are being kicked out pretty fast.

I don't think teams are going to punish Brian Flores for a decision that Josh McDaniels made

Maybe they just like his name? “Flor...ida”

Who’s the next DC in waiting?

People are placing way too much emphasis on needing to be a coordinator for x years.

John & Jim Harbaugh was never a DC or OC. Neither was Chumley Reid.

Flores has 14 years of experience in a multitude of roles. He's been mentored by BB. It's no suprise to me he's getting serious interest

I didn’t realize he was around 14 years. Not sure the Harbaughs are the best example, though; the game has changed a bit. I’m sure Flores interviews well and I’ve read the positive stories, but what does anyone see in Flores’ performance that makes anyone think he’d be a great HC?

The presence of Steve Belichick and James Ferentz on this team tell me this is not, in fact, the "ultimate meritocracy".

Because ?

Give him a 4 year deal worth averaging $2.5 a year guaranteed. Flores would hardly be putting his family at risk $10 million guaranteed over the next 4 years.

So all the other coaches like Fears, Boyer or Daly are also getting raises to at least be somewhere close to Flores then ?

With McDaniels being so front and center and having years of experience AND a previous HC position you can kinda make the argument why he should be on a totally different payscale than most other staff members. With Flores you absolutely can't.

Daly called the plays during the 4th pre season game ... if that means anything.

What if he wasn't part of a SB [which he already has been] but the first defensive coordinator of the Danny Etling era? What if he has a lousy record as defensive coordinator, which he isn't yet already? Bird in the hand...

Unless Brady/BB retire suddenly in the next year or two, I doubt that the competency of this organization will go away overnight.

Furthermore, I don't see BB ever really retiring (like his father). He'll always be around in an advisory capacity as will Ernie Adams, both whispering in McDaniels ears.

Pepper Johnson is another guy with over 15yrs of coaching experience and 5 collective rings. How about him for DC ?

New Head Coaches with LESS experience than Flores:
- Mike Vrabel last year
- Freddie Kitchens
- Zac Taylor
- Kliff Kingsbury
- Matt LaFleur

On the other side, someone who has not officially been a coordinator gets a shot at head coach. Guys who have been head coaches have a better chance of being offered again, even if they have a coordinators job in between.
