Report: McD showing interest in Packers Job

I'm not sure I agree that GB is a terrible job - I think the points about GB vs CLE are all valid...young QB vs old QB, team on the rise vs team in flux, wide open cap situation with tons of young players vs okay/average cap situation for a team with a decent amount of veterans, etc.

I said before McCarthy was fired that I think Josh going to GB would be a high-expectation environment, and I still think that's true. I also don't think they're in as terrible shape cap or roster-wise as some are making it sound, and having a chance to coach one of the elite QBs in the league has to be a hard thing to turn down as an offensive coach and professional competitor. That being said, the opportunity to be the guy that 'LeBrons' the Browns by bringing the title back to your home state could be intriguing too. But at this point in his life, isn't Foxboro "home" as much as anywhere?

CLE has some pieces and looks like they're in a position to make the leap with the right coach and a few more smart moves. Look at the Bears this year - I'm from IL originally as a kid and the Bears are my other woman, and I laughed at some of the moves they've made in recent years, but they (finally) got the right coach with the right QB, and got some guys to fill out the skill positions, and kept Fangio around to coach the defense...and there they are holding the NFCN lead when they were expected to be 3rd at best, they've beat the absolute crap out of some teams, and they've been IN every game whether missing their QB or best D players or whatever. That could be the Browns in 2 years. But they're also still the Browns.

Ultimately I believe (and hope) Josh stays and that there is some sort of transition planned, which seems logical based on his decision to walk away from Indy very late in the game last offseason. If it's true that BB isn't bound to coach interminably, then something needs to be planned or thought about, I can't imagine them going outside the organization for a HC if they believe that's in the next 2-4 years, and if that's not McD then Flores is the only realistic candidate left and he hasn't even been formally named a coordinator yet. But if that sort of "wink wink" arrangement wasn't made, I would think that both GB and CLE are both attractive landing spots for him, albeit for very different reasons...definitely moreso than the Colts.

Eh he will be fired in 3 years.

Still think Browns are the better fit.
He's just not right for Green Bay -- not enough of a "tough guy" for that team's culture and for that division. Plus, he would have a very hard time controlling Rodgers. Agreed that Cleveland/Mayfield would be a much better fit.

Not just saying this because I'm a fan, but New England is 100% the best place for Josh, even if Brady isn't here by the time he takes over

1) He's not "starting over", he'll basically just be taking over the culture Belichick has made in New England for the last 18 years. Of course, it won't be just as easy at that, but players will be more willing to buy into it seeing it's -literally- the same place with the majority of the team being holdovers from whenever Belichick's final year is

2) Incredibly goodwill with both the fanbase and the owner, as opposed to going to Green Bay where it will instantly be championship or bust

3) Rodgers is a diva and coaching him is almost a thankless job. You lose? You're a complete joke. You win? It was all Rodgers. It's "never his fault"

Good luck creating a culture in Green Bay, the culture IS Rodgers, with his huge cap hit and diva personality which no doubt sets a precedent in the lockerroom.

This whole thing is so backwards.

McCarthy is a very good coach. The idea that playcalling is to blame is so incredibly stupid considering Rodgers is the biggest improviser in the league, and it's been pointed out many times this year that he constantly doesn't see wide open players.

The Packers organization has done an excellent job considering Rodgers + Rodgers skill players are all making massive amounts of money yet never among the best offenses (only Rodgers stats are, hmmm....)

Rodgers most recent contract has destroyed the Packers. Rodgers plus Cobb plus Adams plus Graham alone is roughly $65-70M of cap. Rodgers just NEEDED that contract adjustment with two years left, needed everyone on offense resigned, but whines that he doesn't have this and that. They've still put together an average defense, which should be applauded. By contrast, the Patriots are only allowing 2 less points per game, yet Brady is leading them to 5 more points on offense than Rodgers. By the way, Brady + Edelman + Gronkowski + Hogan = roughly $40M of cap.

Explain how any of this reasoning is wrong. Rodgers is so badly underperforming considering his salary and weapons that no coach could possibly win with this team any more. This isn't about Belichick being way smarter than McCarthy or the Patriots organization over the Packers. That's part of it, but the bigger part is the production and cost from the offense. Brady and his skill players are a massive asset; Rodgers and his skill players are a massive liability. It's all about the salary cap.

Panthers: If Rivera gets fired, this is a great spot to be. Cam Newton is in the middle of his prime, Carolina has very good skill position players for the most part. Much easier to build compared to Green Bay's mess.

We differ on the notion that this would be a great spot. Newton will be 30 as a running QB with multiple injuries and concussions, and he's too inconsistent to be relied upon. Couple that with a defense that's aging, and showing it, and I'd consider this a hard pass, if I were McDaniels.

McDaniels to the Browns is more than just a talent issue, the Browns have been an extremely dysfunctional organization for decades now... as much talent as they gather they still languish, while Mayfield shows great promise, without the right coaching he could become a JAG... with all the annual brouhaha on this board about how much BB sucks at the Draft, on paper Cleveland looks like they are geniuses... or maybe not.

He may prefer a more stable organization than one loaded with talent...

Yes, clearly taking the reins of a historically successful franchise with one of the best QBs in NFL history in his prime is a worse idea than becoming the head coach of a franchise whose name is a synonym for futility. Only on Patsfans.

Josh........erase these crazy thoughts from your noggin!
1) Next coach will be considered Rodgers errand boy
2) Rodgers contract cripples roster building
3) FA's and their significant others want S. Beach, Jerry World, LA, NY.....not Chubbyville
4) You failed once as a HC and your job now is to draw up plays, not run franchises.....stay in your lane
5) The Hoodie and Brady have made you interesting.......but you're not special. The dynamic duo have made many home team coordinators seem special. The real world is scary and unforgiving. Robert will always have your back....unless Goodell instructs him otherwise.
6) In GB, you will be handcuffed by committee.
Josh: I'd like to sign Player X
Committee secretary: I will put it on the calendar. The Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month.
7) The NE keys are waiting......patience. You and Brady can run the franchise for the next 2 decades if you throttle down right now.

Umm, how does a guy who is under contract "show interest" in another job?

The events with the colts will have minimal impact on his stock as a HC. Do you honestly think other franchises care about that? Did the Redskins care enough not to pick up Foster? The only things franchises care about are money and the perceived chance to win. The common man might be good and values driven but big corporations aren’t.

The Browns is not the better option to me. For one, we have no idea if Josh likes Mayfield or thinks he’s capable of running his offense. He’s still a rookie. Rodgers would give him the best chance to succeed right away and then still have 3-4 years to groom his own successor.

Even if Josh doesn’t succeed right away, he can say that Rodgers is in decline and refuses to buy into the program. At that point, Rodgers will be 37-38 and the Packers front office would be more inclined to give Josh a few more years with the next QB drafted. I don’t see a lose-lose situation for Josh. He will learn from his last experience not to trade away “important” players immediately like he did in Denver. He has to win over the fans first.

Legacy wise, the pull of the packers name is much stronger than browns. The HFA is much better than the Browns. Sucks to live there but it has a lot going for it football wise.

If its a promotion coaches are free to go.
The least that could come out of this is a commitment to Josh from the Pats that he is the guy.
I wish Josh would publically say hes not interested.
We dont want this to be a distraction as we are battling for the number 1 seed.

McCarthy was a ****ty playcaller.

JM just ended any rumors. And any distractions...

How on Earth would a journalist discover that McDaniels is "showing interest" in the Packers job? Do they have access to his browser history? His phone calls & texts?

Since when is the age 35-36 year "in his prime" for a running/scrambling QB?

The thing is it seems like there will be a lot of available Jobs but not a lot of potentially good Coaches available. I think McCarthy is Top Dog right now who can get any job or have the pick of the litter except for the one in Green Bay.;) How wise would it be for the Patriots to let McDaniels go if BB is going in two years tops Imo?? If that's the case I hope they have something in writing that Josh is BB's successor. I cannot see Krafts playing Roulette with HC part of the Franchise that have been model of stability.
