Thanks for polluting yet another thread with that Butler-Superbowl bullsh*t.

Here's another f*cking thread that's going on ignore for me.

I really wish people would just grow the f*ck up and move the f*ck on.

I really wish people would stop making post saying Butler wouldn't have helped, because till the day i god damned die i will defend my position that Butler would have made more plays in the superbowl that richards.

Butler was getting roasted all night.

And from what i've read, he has had a bad year overall.

But their defense look pretty good overall.

Dion still looked good.

I blame the OP for bringing Butler's SB benching back in to the fold

You can't create a topic saying his name and not expect the Patriots internet to go crazy. It's like saying Ray Lewis and not hearing "killed a guy" back, even though the joke is not funny anymore

It's not a joke, and was never funny. Ray Lewis actually killed two people and got away with it.

It was funny for the first 1000 times, then...

did not watch game, but titans did something in the 2nd half to shut out the cowboys. did they not attack butler in 2nd half?

Logan ryan still looked solid. I guess we try to go away from him? How is Vaccaro looking for them?

:D Ryan was a good player here far from Elite why would Brady shy away from him??

And til the day you die you will be making the incorrect assumption that butler playing corner would have had absolutely anything to do with Richards playing time as a SAFETY.

Feel worse for Lewis. He's a superior player to Butler, gets paid less, and probably would have been happy to continue being a Patriot if we had been willing to pony a little extra, nothing unreasonable.

A little extra to $4,312,500? Nothing unreasonable? Back when he signed, his contract would have only added to an already overloaded salary number for RBs. As I posted back then:

Dion Lewis Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap
Dion Lewis' salary cap number for this year is $4,312,500. This number is just under the total for both James White ($2,437,500) & Rex Burhead ($2,312,500).

Or look at it this way - take White & Burkhead, add in the RBs from the top 51: Mike Gillislee at $2,181,250, Sony Michel at $1,750,308, James Devlin at $1,675,000 & Jeremy Hill at $1,331,250 and they have $16,000,308 or roughly 8.2% of their cap taken up by their "running back by commitee". Tack on Lewis' number and that surges to over 10%. They already have a lot of cap money tied up in RBs. Adding Lewis would have made it even worse.

It's also worth noting that Lewis' $4,312,500 would have have put him at #9 on the Patriots salary cap (#8 if they cut Dwayne Allen). As good as he's played, given his injury history, that's a tough pill to swallow.

Sure - 20/20 hindsight allows us to blank out Gillislee and maybe Hill & Burkhead, but at the time, the Patriots really didn't want to pay what Tennessee offered, much less beat it. They already had too much allocated to the RB position.

with any luck all that extra cash we wasted on the position this year will get put to better use. way too much dead money for players who can't stay on the field.

Yep kinda like a 8 year old who milks the worm dance move after seeing it for the 7th time its gets old fast.:D

Gordon will torch him. Butler looked reallly bad last night vs bad Cowboys WRs.

Cooper is decent..but not a great WR

I miss Dion and still root for him. Such an exciting player.

(I guess I should add “other than this week” but that just seems obvious and cliched.)

And til the day you die you will be making the incorrect assumption that butler playing corner would have had absolutely anything to do with Richards playing time as a SAFETY.

Butler being out meant that Rowe took his spot. That relegated Chung to covering the slot (in Jones' absence) in critical moments in the game, which meant that Richards had to come in and take over a role that Chung was usually handling throughout the season. So yes, Butler being out had an effect on Richards' responsibilities in that game particularly when they were in man. Belichick opted not to use a player at a position that was already thin to begin with (so thin that he had to dress Butler) and had a safety who was allowed to walk to Philly in his first stint over coverage issues against WRs covering a shifty WR out of the slot. It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see how it works out for them.

41 points allowed.

I dont think people realize what they are arguing. They are actually saying Richards should have been playing instead of Butler. It is not like Butler would be tasked with covering the other teams best receivers either. He would provide at least some resistance whereas Richards provided none.

Butler is tasked with guarding the other teams top wr and not doing it well. Put him on the 2nd or 3rd and he’ll do better.

Not only that, but Rowe was an epic disaster early on in the game that the Eagles players and coaches even said point blank they went out of the way to target. Better play at that position early on in that game is probably the difference.

Guys i got a question: If Butler gets cut do you guys know if we get a comp pick? He is really bad i am afraid ...
