We've had numerous RB threads since we've lost a couple to injury to which I posted use Patterson at the position, particularly for miscellaneous snaps to give your primary guy white a break.

At Buffalo we saw this tried for the first time with mixed results. Of course coolade was right on top of this also. Gillislee nope. Thx.

The beauty of this usage is he's also your kick returner and jet sweep quick screen wide out . Versatility is belichick mantra so no brainer here IMO..

I thought the use of Patterson as an RB bodes well for a quicker return by Mitchell. They didn't bother to sign an RB off the practice squad or the street to waste time coaching him up for a game against the Bills where they calculated that they didn't need a huge running game (although the Bills almost made them regret that calculation). Instead they went with, "Cordarelle, can you step into Bill's office for a moment? Have we got a job for you!" It also gets Patterson some reps for an emergency situation where they need to put him in when everyone else is dinged up (a recurring problem this season). Did Barner also get hurt last night? Only saw him on one or two plays.

He did fine. TBH I was expecting a fumble eventually but he held onto the rock and had a couple of decent runs.

Yup.. my takeaway also.. he didn't fumble which is priority 1.. then he took what was there and popped a little. This I think will increase as he gets more comfortable cutting back. But I think he's being coached conservative to go where play is designed... so good job overall.

I don’t want to see him as a RB ever again. You are asking for an injury. Don’t go the Ty Montgomery route.

In his previous five seasons, Patterson averaged 8.8 carries/yr, most of those on sweeps, end-arounds, etc. He's never had more than 13 carries in a season. He had 10 carries last night alone, and now has 17 in just half a season with the Pats.

I thought he did okay, considering. What mostly made it work was the play design, plus Patterson's athleticism, determination and strength. But I also think using him was mostly experimental.

Patterson doesn't seem to possess the techniques of a "real" RB. He runs too upright, doesn't have the right kind of shuffle-step/stutter step for into-the-line work, etc. He also doesn't appear to have the vision for the cutback lane in the phonebooth, or the cut/burst/timing to take advantage. He DOES have versions of those techniques and abilities that work very well in the open field (receptions, returns), though. And, I think he could successfully adapt enough of that over time to be consistently at least adequate in certain situations.

I don't think it's anywhere close to realistic to think that he'll be a regular up-the-middle contributor out of the backfield. However, I think Patterson was sufficiently successful in establishing himself last night for McD to be able use him under similar circumstances as at least a misdirect later in the season and in the playoffs - which as probably the whole point of the experiment.

WRT Barner, I think he would've run the ball more successfully last night, but Patterson's first "test" attempts were good enough to keep it going for awhile, instead of bringing Barner in. IOW, had Patterson totally face-planted on his first couple attempts, we might've seen a lot more of Barner.

Anyway, once Michel is healthy, and after (if?) Burkhead comes back from IR, assuming that the Pats keep Barner, they'll be back to a full house in the RB room, with Patterson filling the Bolden role, more or less.

As PatsDeb said, I think it bodes well for a quick return for Michel that the Pats didn't make a roster move to add a RB. It gives teams something else to think about, if he ever did get around the corner, he would be tough to run down.

I think that BB did not want to use too much of James White last night. White has become invaluable to the Pats offense, and they didn't want to wear him out.

Hopefully Michel will be back on Sunday night.

He looked very uncomfortable. He runs upright which makes falling forward pretty much impossible, so short yardage runs are a recipe for disaster. He was indecisive as to what hole to run to, which is understandable, and could improve with reps.

But it seems to me that what you have is someone who will run for minimal gain 70% of the time, run for no gain or for a loss 20% of the time, but that can bust a long one if given a hole that you can drive a truck through. Good NFL defenses rarely allow a hole that you can drive a truck through.

So I think it was not so encouraging.

Sweeps and end around makes sense because he is so fast.

But off-tackle runs, lol. He runs too high, he's gonna get killed.

I love his willingness to accept any role the coaching staff presents him though.

He's becoming one of my favorite players.

Although i hate how predictable we get when he gets on the field.

Patterson is not a running back. At best he's a guy who you can use to ambush another team with a surprise carry. He's strong and quick, and I've loved his ability to run after the catch, but being a regular rotation at running back is a whole nother animal than outsmarting the secondary to add another 4-5 yards to a catch, which is where Patterson's strength lies

Honestly if I wanted to convert one Pats receiver into a RB my first choice is Julian Edelman. He has the mentality, attitude and physical strength to play a role similar to the one James White currently plays.
