He is snubbing a 5th year option of $13.8 million (understandable as he can be franchised next year as well) for a long term deal. There are reports he wants $65 million guaranteed money, eclipsing Suh.

Somehow, that sort of deal doesn't even sound like a pipe dream for the Pats, unless the team cap increases about $50 million per year.

As people have mentioned, who do you trade? The only way the Pats could even afford Mack right now is to give him a mega extension which lowers his 2018 cap hit so much it all but assures we'll have a big cap problem in a couple seasons.

As a percentage of the salary cap, Adalius Thomas’ $7 million per year average in 2007 is like $11.4 million per year now. That’s not really at all comparable to Mack’s situation, given that he’s pushing for roughly double that.

They did pay Thomas and Colvin and many others. Thomas was bounced, and Colvin was released one year early after two stints on the IR in 4 years. Milloy, another big contract, was released in year 4 of 7 after declining to take a pay cut.

The Pats will pay, but they want an exit strategy if the deal goes south. Inking guaranteed, multi-year contracts at the high end of the scale where the team is locked in if the player doesn't play as expected, or simply team priorities change, doesn't sound like any Patriots contract I can recall.

An earlier article had a Gronk for Mack swap but that's messed up on many levels. First of all, Gronks value at TE is higher than Mack's value. Gronk is historically amazing, while Mack, despite being a top 3 DE in the league, just isn't on that same level. Second, Gronk is on a multi-year, cheap deal (with respect to the cap inflation every year) while Mack is likely to get a contract close to double that of Gronk's. Third, the Raiders will want extra compensation for Mack. I believe that we should want extra compensation for Gronk in a straight up deal.

The biggest thing that's "messed up" about that article, and the one posted in here, is that it is just a reporter trying to find something to get fans to click on. There's no legitimate information behind it. The article is no different than if a random poster here got access to ESPN's web site and started writing stuff that just happened to pop into his mind after scanning NFL rosters.

There’s probably not a team in less of a need at guard than the Raiders.

The Pats could send their 2019 1st round pick, and Detroit's 3rd round pick for Mack.

They would have to sign him to at least a five year deal with a large signing bonus and a decent amount of guaranteed money over the first three years, but if they did that, they can make his cap hits in the 15 million a year range, which is manageable. They would have to come up with at least as much guaranteed money as he would have gotten if he did nothing (13 mil this year, and then the 17+ mil franchise tag (most likely twice) so say @ 50 million. Mack is 27, a year or so older than most guys when they come to their first big FA period. So he may be willing to sign a 5 year deal, provided that the last few years are not "funny money".

Right now the Pats have 9.3 million in cap space, they can free up another 10 million in cap space if they cut/trade Allen, J. McCourtey, and Gillislee.

Does anyone here think that if you inserted Mack into that pathetic defense that got smoked by a back up QB in the Superbowl, he wouldn't have made enough plays to make a difference?

There aren’t a ton of first round pick trades to compare to, but that’s roughly similar to what Brandin Cooks was traded for both times, except with an extra 9 month wait before getting to use the picks. Do we really think Mack is worth less than Cooks?
