I will say let’s wait until the regular season starts in terms of the officiating. They always are prone to throw more flags in the preseason.

Lmao what a god damn joke.

There was another call that was more ridiculous. And what made it worse was the NFL ass sniffing Dungy's commentary on the hit.

I hope that it's just preseason "send a message " type stuff because if those calls carry into the regular season it's going to suck.

Get ready for it to either suck or for the NFL to admit the mistake and walk it back. Which do you think is going to happen?

Not sure why people feel the need to extrapolate from "this specific new rule and/or its implementation sucks" to "any measure taken to improve safety is bad and makes the men gay".

It's going to suck and change the outcome of games. That's what's going to happen.

When I was a kid my friends and I would talk about great catches or runs but now we talk about what a catch is or was and will soon be talking about what a legal hit is.

Since they seem content to throw flags whenever a defensive player even so much as lowers his helmet (even with no clear evidence of helmet to helmet contact), I kind of doubt that. At least for now. They should be calling these against the offense, too. OL lead with their helmet on almost every running play and RBs often lower their helmet just before collision. Somehow, I don't think that will be the case either since this policy change was enacted by a league that clearly wants more offense.

One inherent problem with this rule is that it defies the physics of victory. "Low man wins", after all.

Example of the latter?

If that's a penalty, then what is #48 (I think) on Chicago supposed to do to (a) make a play in that situation and (b) avoid getting penalized? The receiver jumped in the air to make a catch in the end zone. If the defender lets him land before hitting him, it may still count as a TD if the receiver controls the ball long enough. Maybe the defender could have just tried to wrap him up, but there's still a chance his helmet would be involved in the collision.

It's great that the league is presenting examples of what will be penalized, but I haven't seen them offer alternatives to what these players could have done instead of committing a penalty.

Here's the flagged hit I was referring to.

The defender seemed to lower his head and drive it into the receiver's shoulder.

That, imo, is a text book tackle. Helmet is in front of the receiver's pads and most of the contact is from the defender's left shoulder pad.

Agree. I'm just trying to figure out what aspect of it the refs saw as being in violation.

Ok, Tony. What affects the outcome of the game more - “wrong“ call of illegal hit or illegal hit? Quite a few illegal hits changed the outcome of the season last yr not only a game. And Pats got the taste of it more than once in the past. Same people bashing the rule and officiating before the season even started sang different tune (with the same roar though) when Gronk&co were on the receiving end.

Jumping the gun makes little sense. I don't see BB&co bothered. I didn't see Matty P bothered. Both had the same reaction: lets gather information, see how the officials go about it throughout the preseason and prepare the team accordingly. Lets start with that. And give things some time.

If the NFL thinks the catch rule was tough to handle this rule is their worst nightmare. Especially if tackles like that are flagged.

I know it's the preseason but the other bogus call basically cost the bears 4 points. What would have been a field goal attempt turned into a TD. I fear that's what we'll see a lot of this season.

I disagree. If the point is to get rid of spearing and headshots then do that. If the point is to redefine what a textbook tackle is in order to make the game "safer" then stop playing football.

Why a have a vague as shyt rule when you could implement a technological solution that would accomplish a whole lot more towards player safety?

Because they'd rather have a subjective rule?

Impact, torque, velocity sensors for one.

If they wanted to know how many and how hard a player is hit they could have that data live.

If they were truly concerned about the future consequences of playing football they could track all impact data throughout a player's career.

But hey let's just make a subjective rule and pretend we care.

This very wealthy league can afford to pay Goodell an annual salary in the $50M range, but can't afford goal line cameras. I can't imagine they're willing to shell out the bucks for sensor technologies.
