OT: Cooks signs 5-year extension with Rams

I wasn't the one who introduced the Cooks-Lloyd comparison, which I don't actually think is apt. My post was mostly a tangent, I have to confess. I think Cooks is about as good a #1 as Lloyd was a #2.
I know. I was just reminding everyone that Lloyd's numbers are deceptive.

I know Gronk plays different position .....He deserves to get paid
Gronk > Cook > Watkins

I'm not sure he's the same type of receiver (downfield threat) that we're discussing. Matthews has been more of a short - intermediate route runner with a career yards / reception of under 12. He's likely a decent fit in the slot, but probably won't clear out coverage like Cooks.

I classify Mathews as a possession WR like Givens.

Like you say, short - middle is where he earns his keep. FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Jordan Matthews

Dorsett's the one to watch. Whether he gets cut tomorrow, makes the all-NFL team for the Patriots, or falls somewhere in between, he's the one WR on the team with the theoretical combination of skill set and measurables to really take the deep threat role following Cooks.

His problems have been catch rate.

When he landed in NE, Dorsett did not play much at all. Later on in the season he made some nice catches after some development from the NE coaching staff. If he puts it all together and makes the roster it will be another savvy move by BB because he likely knew that Cooks was down the road. Brady was not enamored with Cooks.

Play for the Patriots get paid insane money somewhere else....
Derrell Revis
Chandler Jones
Jamie Collins
Malcolm Butler
Brandin Cooks
Just to name a few. Bat signal call to any veteran still in their prime looking for a 1 year deal and then that last huge contract.

And it works out perfectly for the Pats. When players demand (and will eventually receive) cap-distorting salaries, having other teams pay that money helps the Pats. It becomes a competitive advantage.

Sure, Gronk "should get paid" but the salaries drawn by players on teams that are cap-stupid are not relevant metrics.

His problem has been getting open. Route running. The guy’s still a big question mark along with Malcolm Mitchell

Trey Flowers will be the next patriot to leave for bigger money. We don't pay our stars

Without cooks, we don't beat Jacksonville and get to the Super Bowl . Jags all star CBs shutdown our possession wrs easily, and it was Cooks deep speed which won us the game.
Completely agree.
Now we need to get Patterson to show his potential.
Because not only is he lightening but he is a load to handle.

A few just off the top of my head:

Brady gets paid
Moss got paid
Wilfork got paid
Seymour got paid
Gronk got paid
Hernandez got paid
Mayo got paid
Hightower got paid
McCourty got paid

The other two key ingredients you forgot that won us the game was our defense saving a sputtering offense and Amendola being clutch.

Cooks had a good game but it kinda was perfectly reflective of what the issue with him was. He has elite straight line speed but that is pretty much it. He was never elusive nor quick and essentially could only be used on the boundry. Which was the perfect fit to keep the Jags CBs engaged but it also explains why he got no TDs or not more than 155 yards in total last postseason. For the most part he was a chess piece to stretch opponents but that skillset is simply not worth the money he is getting now in a McDaniels offense.

Whenever the team tried to give him the ball in the middle of the field he became like a deer in headlights. Just look at his two most infamous plays from the SB. He is just not comfortable in traffic which is just not a good match for a player here in Foxboro.

Meanwhile Aaron Donald is a tad perplexed at this deal.....

Cooks has not even played a snap in the LA offensive system...

I am happy Cooks got his money. The whole situation only tells us trading him for a 1st round pick was a smart and unavoidable move. I am not discussing either he is worth the money or not but investing in a player who did not even touch the field in LA is debatable. My bottom line is both sides are happy. Pats used the opportunity and got the pick, the Archer changed the surrounding and got paid.
