The Germans have looked awful defensively. Mexico should be up 2-0. So many chances. They have been better than Germany in this first half. They need to keep attacking. The Germans look weak defensively.

It's not about that. There's no money in soccer in this country, so the most talented athletes turn to football, basketball, hockey, and baseball. Those four sports soak up a great deal of talent in this country, so there's not much left over for soccer.

There has to be some reason that a country this size can't seem to put together a decent men's soccer team and your reason makes perfect sense. Maybe the ladies have been successful because they don't have the opportunities in the other sports here like the men.

I posted earlier in this thread that I was involved with youth sports from the 90's thru the 00's and have talked to some of the athletes from that time who are now adults. When I talk with them now soccer comes up because we talk about the kids who played soccer instead of those other sports. Most of them said that they liked soccer when they were young but not as much as they got older. That isn't meant as a criticism, just what the attitude of those athletes was then.

Mexico should be up 2-0 or 3-0. I hope that doesn’t come back to bite them. I expect Germany to come out strong. Mexico needs to stay aggressive in my mind. Don’t go into a shell.

For a country the size of Mexico, and considering the size of Mexico in general, you would think they would be a super power in the sport, but they’re not.

At the same time, they have less people than Japan. Kind of sparse.

You clearly don’t like the sport, and that’s fine. You made your feelings felt earlier in this thread, but now your trying to degrade it to feel better about yourself.

Don’t like the sport don’t watch, and leave this thread for those that want to talk about the WC.

Tough to respect any sport where writhing in agony when literally nobody has actually touched you is “part of the game.”

It doesn't appear that our country's youth likes the game all that much.

When it comes to boys, soccer is a great sport for suburban white moms to let their kids play to keep them safer than football (hence the demographic called “soccer moms”). Truly talented, elite athletes - especially from urban areas - are going football, basketball or baseball. That’s why the US dominates basketball (and we would dominate football except for the fact that no other country really even plays).

Elite girls, OTOH, have far fewer options. They tend to go to either soccer or basketball. As such, the U.S. women’s team has won multiple World Cups and is a major player on the global stage.

Takes a special team to be aggressive yet disciplined, Mexico ain't it. But to their credit, they aren't overdoing it. Germany getting frustrated. Two yellows in the space of a few minutes.
