Because your posting indicates otherwise. Smart IS an elite defender. There is no question about that.I get that that is the narrative. But it's not reality. This happens a lot in pro sports. A guy goes from being properly rated to being overrated. Rondo comes to mind. Lebron comes to mind. His first few years in the league he was a bad defender and people probably went overboard in criticizing his defense. When he matured as a player and got better defensively people properly rated his defense for a very short period of time. Then the pendulum started swinging in the other direction. Now, for no apparent reason, people are completely overrating his defense and have been for a long time.
Smart is a solid defender when he wants to be. He's not an elite defender. It isn't even almost worth what he does to the offense with his constant unforced turnovers and brain dead shots.
He was a .820% FT shooter in the regular season. He is one of the best on the team.Tatum is a phenomenal player but he needs to work on his FT shooting.

Don't judge him on missing a few in one game. Overall the Celtics have not been shooting FT's particularly well in the post season...especially at the end of games.
That's an issue for us because it gives teams that should be dead to rights with a few seconds left a chance for a last shot to tie the game. I sure as hell don't want to give LeBron an extra chance at the end of a game.
Until Simmons is able to hit some jump shots behind the arc he is not much of a threat against coaches like Stevens and elite defenses.tatums done more than both of phillys last 2 #1's combined........
I find it pretty bizarre that A) ben simmons does not shoot 3's......he is 0-11 in his career B) markelle fultz basically went on IR because his shooting form was so bad, it was killing his shoulder
this year, simmon's FT% is a shaq-like 54% and fultz is 47%.......there's nothing you can do with that.......don't expect either of them to be hoisting 3's any time soon
meanwhile, the celts 2 #3 are jackin' em up from everywhere and hitting many of them
as for bigs like embiid and davis, there's a reason why it looks like the 4 centers in the conference finals are horford, capela, love, and green
Never contended that Tatum and Brown should be the headliners.. just suggesting as a viewer it was a lot nauseating to hear the continual crap about Embid and Simmons.. keep in mind that Embid has only played in 94 games and Simmons in 81, hardly "stars" that have stood the test of time..
To hear continually how wonderful Embid and Simmons are at the expense of any Boston player or this team is a disservice to the viewer.. if you listen to the announcers both 76'er players are the second coming of something, not sure what.
My expectation as a viewer is something more balanced... the bad thing about this was that there was no broadcast on NBC Sports Boston, so I had no choice...
The Celtics have been a treat to watch all season and I have urged casual fans to tune in more consistently because otherwise they are seriously missing out.How lucky are we in NE that we can go from the Pats in the Super Bowl, to the Bruins in the playoffs, to the Celts in the playoffs and overachieving given their injuries? And when the Celtics' run ends, we'll have the Red Sox, who look pretty good so far. Then we'll be back to the Pats. How many other regions can say that all their pro teams are in it to win it every year?
I am not much of a basketball fan, but I am a fair weather Celtics-in-the-playoffs fan, and watching them has been fun with no expectations.
I have not been this entertained by the Celtics in a very long time. Moreso than the years of the Big 3 even.
Came on to write precisely that.lol refs trying to keep this close in the second part of 2nd Q??
