Mayo Has One Word to Describe Patriots QB Drake Maye

When it comes to describing rookie quarterback Drake Maye, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said there’s one word that certainly sums him up after what he’s seen from his young QB.

“He’s been steady. I think if I was to say one word, it’s steady,” said Mayo on Tuesday.  “He’s always in the building, always studying. He’s out here trying to get better each and every day. And he’ll get more reps this week, if that’s the question. If that’s the underlying question, he’ll get more reps this week, believe me.”

Maye had some positive moments again on Tuesday, including making an unbelievable throw to fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk during the 1-on-1 portion of their joint session against the Eagles.

On the pass, Maye lofted a perfect throw up the left sideline and dropped it in just ahead of Polk, who hauled it in for a would-be touchdown.

That was arguably one of Maye’s best throws so far, albeit during the team portion there were issues he dealt with – especially down the stretch – due to a lack of protection.

But one thing that can’t be denied is his demeanor, with the rookie often remaining pretty even-keeled even when things aren’t going his way.  Those were attributes that were discussed quite a bit before the club even drafted him, and they continue to serve him well through this first month of training camp.

Mayo said on Tuesday that he expects the rookie to see more time when both Philadelphia and New England take the field at Gillette Stadium Thursday night, and he credits Maye for always taking advantage of every opportunity to improve.  Mayo cited Maye doing just that last Thursday against Carolina when, despite playing just one series, Maye was busy the rest of the game taking every rep from a mental aspect through the remainder of the contest.

“I would also say when he wasn’t in the game, he was still listening to the calls, still taking those mental reps, which are very important,” said Mayo.  “I always talk to all the players, ‘if you’re not in there, you should be getting mental and going through the checks in your head.’ He definitely did that.”

Following Tuesday’s practice, Maye told reporters he walked away with what he called “a lot of learning moments” from the team’s joint session against Philadelphia.  We’ll see how that translates when we hopefully see a little more from him Thursday night.
