Would I be shocked if BB trades up for Nelson though esp. if he gets passed by and drops significantly like OG usually do? Nope.
With Nelson team arguably gets the best chance of NFL success of any prospect and by far the best chance to keep him after rookie deal (esp. NE) - its true that IOL market skyrocketed this yr but its still at half price compared to top edge, CB, WR.
The other interesting thing is that he might be the most ready of all OL prospects to step up at tackle short term if needed (in light of Garcia, Jelks possibly needing more time, Waddle injury prone).
At very least - Dante was there to enjoy some Nelson
I'd be shocked. Who would he displace as a starter? For that kind of draft capital, he needs to see the field. Nelson is good in short areas, but we put our OL in space quite a bit. He's not bad there, but it's not his forte. I don't think he's so much better than our current starters that he's worth two 1sts. He's not falling out of the top 15 (and even moving to 15 would take more than I'd like to give up).
You make a good point about position, though. I like the reasoning for IOL, and I've been advocating for Daniels, Wynn (my favorite; can play OT or guard), and Ragnow early. Any of those three would be good between 31 and 43. Ragnow might even make it further due to injuries. Nelson is excellent, but he's not that much better than Wynn, who looks like a coaching clinic on every snap. Ragnow is also very good, and he's been the highest rated IOL by PFF for two straight years, if you believe their grades. He can play guard or center and be an upgrade next year (maybe not ready to dethrone anyone his rookie year). Daniels is the most pro ready center I've seen in a while. Technique (we like those Iowa kids), athleticism, size, power -- oh, and he's one of the youngest players in the entire draft.
Save 23 for a more premium position. As thin as the OT position seems, IOL is strong and pretty deep this year. I'd be surprised and disappointed to trade up unless it's for a QB of the future, a starting LT, or a sliding transformational talent on defense.
