JMac was 27th overall last year in the entire NFL according to PFF.

Butler was 51st. Gilmore 7th.

You cant struggle so badly and still get almost into the top 25 corners conversation.

Watch it, some posters (I won’t name names) don’t take too kindly when PFF is brought up.

I may have missed it, but did we ever learn exactly what Jones' injury was? The severity of injury could be a significant factor re: 2018 plans.

"Broken foot" was the last media report (several different, more or less reliable local media sources).

Good point. I dont care much for PFF at certain positions. Corner seems like one of the few ones that often is a bit easier to grade because you can observe the overall coverage and then the technique which is used by a DB. Many other positions (safeties, OL, LB) are a joke because you dont know any thing about the actual schemes or specific tasks for players.

Sometimes DBs also get into misevaluated plays but I feel like those are a rare number over an entire season.

Anyway that is my short opinion on PFF.

Never learned the exact injury only that he would be fine for the OTAs.

Great deal. Good player. Should help the defense and the locker room.
Surprised to get a player that good for a cost that low. Why did Cleveland want to release a starting-caliber corner costing $3mm? Why couldn't they get anything more than a couple slots in the seventh for him.

I'm using Miguel's numbers. He has the Pats at roughly $17.4M after the McCourty trade, but not including the 2018 cap hits of draftees, which he estimates at between $2.5M and $3.0M additional cost to the cap (I'm using $2.75M to split the difference). I assume he's accounting for the "push-down effect" on the top-51 (a detail he's unlikely to miss).

That gets my number down to $14.7. I'm setting aside $6.0M for in-season expenses (emergencies, NLTBE incentives, etc.), which yields $8.7M

Then, I'm using Burkhead's original projected 2017 cap hit of $3.15M (he didn't earn quite that much due to missing 6 games). That gets me down to $5.56M usable.

Id guess draftees will be less than 2M because unless BB fell in love with someone in top 15 he'll probably trade down, he might trade out a pick or two etc.

Also don't get too much ahead of the cap space needed in-season. They can create that as they go. They won't hesitate to sign what they need/like. This is a healthy cap - they are around league average at the moment for 2018 and for 2019 as well.. (they have 6th most cap in 2020 although that's less relevant at this point in a 2 yr league - still shows you there's some safe space in the future)

Can't imagine why

Tom Brady is no longer a top-5 QB

So is CB solved?

Get yourself a couple day 3 / UDFAs even if just as camp bodies and see what happens. But apart from that I dont think it needs any more touching.

And by trading they don't have to worry about comp pick impact.

If CLE had released him, he wouldn't count against the Pats anyways.

Don't think it is in the cards. He has a reasonable salary and CB's are in demand...yet the Browns were unable to trade him?

Maybe the Pats think they can sign him for less $$ than the Browns were paying him....

I spoke too early. Love the trade...a 6 for 7 swap and you get a 3M #2/#3 corner who can play.

Would have loved a Bennett brothers reunion, but will settle for a McCourty pair!!

I think it is a decent move. As much as I'd like another top flight corner to pair with Gilmore it's not a huge deal.

I think Jason McCourty will be a good fit. Now we can really focus on shoring up that front seven.

Id still draft Jaire Alexander f.e. if the opportunity presented itself..

If Cleveland doesn’t want him, it’s probably a good move to get him.

The Browns played primarily a man coverage scheme last season and McCourty was very effective. His play tailed off towards the end of the year, though whether that's because of age and fatigue or because he packed it in for an 0-16 team is anyone's guess.
