MORSE: Highlights of Patriots Day One Practice

Day one of Training Camp is in the books. The team started practice by bringing out newly adopted dogs to their new owners. The Players brought the pets out to the families. It was a cute gesture the Patriots had with three shelters bringing dogs for adoption. The highlight was Stephon Diggs bringing his small dog out and putting him on the ground, but forgetting to grab the leash. The dog immediately scampered away with Diggs chasing after him. Diggs really tested that knee chasing the dog, eventually pressing the canine up against a fence.
Drake Maye was impressive in 11 on 11 with 8 completions out of 9 attempts. The one incompletion should have been an interception by Jabrill Peppers who bobbled the pass and let it fall to the ground. Maye made a good throw to Kyle Williams, beating Christian Gonzalez. Williams went up and snatched the ball away from Gonzalez. Diggs was the recipient of the 1st pass from Maye. Later in the practice, Williams was coming free on a post-corner route, but Maye didn’t see him. Maye checked down to complete a pass to Diggs.
The Offensive line is still a big question mark. The starters were Campbell at LT, Strange at LG, Bradbury at C, Onwenu at RG and Moses at RT. Moses gave up two sacks and didn’t look good. Campbell also struggled, giving up a sack to Keion White. Jarod Wilson got some snaps at C and then at LG. Caedan Wallace was the 2nd team LG.
It is very hard to gauge practices in shorts and shells. Let’s see what the O-line looks like in one-on-ones once the pads come on. Keon White was one of the players that would have been credited with a sack.
Stephon Diggs was not a full participant in practice during the final two 11 11 sessions. This is not a concern and should be an expectation for further practices.
Jahlani Tavai came off PUP list, and Carlton Davis and Jeremiah Webb were lifted off the NFI lists. Mack Hollins was dressed but did work on the lower field. The one player that wasn’t listed on either list was Ja’Lynn Polk. He rode the stationary bike and worked on the lower field and didn’t participate in practice. Vrabel announced that Josh Minkins should be off the NFI in a few days. Vederian Lowe and Austin Hooper remain on PUP.
In another surprise on the first day of camp was that Jabrill Peppers and Kyle Dugger were on the field together at the start for the 1st team Defense. Craig Woodson and Dell Pettus were next up followed by Jaylinn Hawkins and Marcus Epps.
“Effort and finish is our number one goal out there on every play,” Robert Spillane said in a post practice interview. “It starts with that and ends with that. [Coach Vrabel’s] going to put out the best people that want to work and want to put out the effort.”
