FYI, the Patriots signed Leigh Bodden of the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions, and he was the Patriots #1 CB in 2009, and not necessarily by default although he certainly wasn't elite.

Or maybe flip this around..... if the Patriots just reacquired Jamie Collins, would you be saying the same thing?

Bodden was actually elite in 2009. The Patriots rewarded him with a big contract and he promptly got hurt and never played again, which wasn't really something you can control.

Btw, this is what our splash moves are going to look like this year (trades and signing released players). No way we give up those comp picks.

I like it for two reasons:

First, from a purely football standpoint, he's a potential upgrade over Rowe, Jones, etc.

Second, IF (and I'm not convinced it's really an issue, but IF) there is any latent grumblings over what happened with Butler in the Super Bowl, making a move that excites Devin (one of your defensive captains) could have intangible benefits.

They will only give up those comp picks if they sign someone with an avg contract above 10m per if i am not mistaken.

I remember 2 or 3 trade deadlines ago many of us on here thought the trade happened after a fake twitter account tweeted it, can't remember who the account was based off of, Rap Sheet?

This is incredible blitz-krieg move by Bill and Nick.

They get a solid vet CB for 1 year 3M cap hit. No need to compete for new deal w other teams or multi year deal negotiations w J-Mac..

They don't lose a pick, just swapping lowest picks.

The Pats trade the #205 for the #219 - lose 14 spots.

This is a good move, and honestly given the other needs across the roster, it makes way more sense to get a solid second-tier CB like J-Mac for a good price than paying a lot for Sherman or Talib. Solid CB tandem.

I'm fuzzy on the rules but I know the cancellation formula is forgiving to the team that lost value (i.e. if we pay a guy 6, it won't cancel Butler's 10). Not sure what happens if we sign more UFAs than we lose outright, though.

My main point is more that the impact UFAs will almost all cost enough to cancel the good comp picks.

It was a trade not a free agent
Shouldn't effect our comp pick.

BB says, "McCourty, you're in."

McCourty twins be like...
