Pats just traded for a defensive player on a 0-16 team. So glad BB is back!!!!!!
Yeah, they have no good players. This Myles Garrett guy? Overrated.

I can't believe how happy I am with this move - he's on the books for just under 3 million and he's a top corner in the league! PFF ranked him as the 27th best corner in the league last year (with the Browns) and we have him for pennies! I don't know if this is the inner-Belichick in me speaking but this deal is amazing. Its better than having to sign him on the open market since we gave up no value and signed him for much less than what he would get on the open market.

This is incredible blitz-krieg move by Bill and Nick.

They get a solid vet CB for 1 year 3M cap hit. No need to compete for new deal w other teams or multi year deal negotiations w J-Mac..

They don't lose a pick, just swapping lowest picks.

The good thing is that I won't have to hear or read people wanting him every off-season anymore, he is up there with Larry Fitzgerald.

So basically a trade-down of two spots. Patriots will be on the hook for a salary of 2.4 million for cap purposes or also the roster bonus?

14 spots 205 to 219

I'd say he's more like Brandon Lloyd here. We all knew it was going to happen eventually, but perhaps overrate the impact.

PS he has to be better than Rowe so that's something.

FYI, the Patriots signed Leigh Bodden of the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions, and he was the Patriots #1 CB in 2009, and not necessarily by default although he certainly wasn't elite.

Or maybe flip this around..... if the Patriots just reacquired Jamie Collins, would you be saying the same thing?

Yea even Bill could't mess this one up, this was on a tee. They can try him out at either corner or safety.

he's not going to replace butler, is he?

Yeah, that's how I feel. He's an upgrade on Rowe as a #2 and is probably better than Butler. The NFL1000 folks had him as the T-17th best outside corner in the league last year (they rank slots and outside on different lists), which would have made him the best corner on the Patriots (Gilmore was 28th, mainly owing to his slow start, and Butler 42nd; Jones and Rowe were 22nd and 21st as slot defenders). If we take all corners into account, only two slot players (Chris Harris and Kendall Fuller) had higher rankings, making McCourty tied for 20th among all corners, which fits with his PFF ranking.

McCourty's ranked above players like Talib, Breeland, Norman, Jenkins, and others who are getting paid substantially more. And, of course, he knows our free safety pretty well.

Took some time for the Patriots to make a move but it was a great one.

The Patriots will pay his $375k bonus tomorrow, and then he gets $15,625 for each game that he’s active ($250k maximum). $3 million total if he plays all 16 games.

They traded for a guy who was going to be released anyway? I'm guessing they didn't want to compete in offering him a contract? Some team might have offered $5m per with the money being thrown around.

Short money, no commitment past this season and the only guaranteed money is his $550k roster bonus.

Even before the winless team connection was brought to my attention with your post, this acquisiton reminded me quite a bit of Bodden. Solid starter, but aging.
