I missed the end of the game, they switched to stupid Steelers.....so was that the only time anyone celebrated with him?

That was the only time for a big celebration, can't comment on the level of excitement on his other plays.

Thanks, Joker. I fixed it my earlier post. Happy New Year.

I just read that James Harrison was undrafted out of Kent State where Julian Edelman played college football. Cool.

He also has had no dust ups with the law since the 2008 domestic abuse arrest. I hope the anger management and maturation have worked for him in this regard.
I read this as “anger management and masturbation” at first.

Rodney's good, but George is in a whole different league.

My Sweet Lord!

That smell you smell is the the crap Eric Fisher made in his pants when he realized if the bills don't beat the jags and the chiefs win he has to go up against Harrison

Come on now guys. Let's not put James Harrison in Canton just yet ... oh, wait a minute!

This play raises some questions for me. How was he able to play this so perfectly? From the defensive call or just from experience? Why have we failed to stop this type of plays consistently this season? I remember our LBs always being too out of position to take plays like this out. This was so perfect. I can imagine what BB would have done with him in his prime.

Love how Roberts finally caught up to the ball just in time to congratulate Harrison for making the play.

He is a massive upgrade in setting the edge. What I saw was that we would flip Harrison to what we guessed the playside of the forthcoming snap would be, and put Lee on the weakside. Lee really struggles with edge contains- just lets himself get sucked inside and fails to keep his outside arm free for the bounce tackle. He can't hold the edge to make an outside tackle to save his life. Flowers also has problems in this area- he doesn't anticipate getting sealed inside and fails to see outside block for what it is. It's like he walks into the trap every single time.

Wish I could upvote this paragraph a couple more times. This x1000.

I put played to what I expected.

I had a feeling he could still play but I also don't want to think he's the JH of old because of a couple of garbage time sacks.

Is this a serious post?

Those 2 sacks are probably the least important things he did all game long. He was setting the edge very well, was competent in coverage when he was asked to cover, and was getting pressure on the QB well before he got those 2 sacks.

No one is saying that he's the Harrison of old, but he showed great general awareness whenever he was in there. He's going to be a very valuable piece of this defense in the postseason.

I knew he could still play.
If you really disect what I said, the old JH was a beast of a pass rusher and those two sacks don't mean he still is.

Still shake my head when people base Edge play in NE on sacks.. Sacks are nice but it's not about sacks it's about bringing pressure and forcing hurries while setting the edge.

Brady6 was whining in the GF (Garoppolo Fanboy) thread talking about how Chandler Jones was another dumb trade because he got 17 sacks for a .500 team. Yes dumb trade that netted Thuney & Mitchell (Big contributors in a SB win) in the draft and didn't have to pay a guy who went missing after Thanksgiving in NE $16.5m a year.

On the flip side Belichick got 17 sacks from 6 guys (Wise, A.Butler, M. Flowers, Lee, Harrison and Marsh) that he brought in this year and cost a grand total of $2.4m in salary for this year

Also on the season

Patriots- 42 sacks (t-7th) (Missing Hightower most of the year and missing T. Flowers and Van Noy for multiple games)

Cardinals- 37 sacks (t-17th)

was looking for the Better than Monty Beisel option.... there wasnt onem so better than expected seems to fit.

It was pretty simple. He dropped into his zone and made a play on the only guy who came near it.

5 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF. One coverage tackle that killed a drive as you mentioned.

But the biggest thing to me is he sets the edge competently- he set the edge that led to the Roberts RB tackle for a loss to set up that 3rd and 19 that killed that Jets drive. So you could say Harrison had a big role in killing two drives.

He is a massive upgrade in setting the edge. What I saw was that we would flip Harrison to what we guessed the playside of the forthcoming snap would be, and put Lee on the weakside. You have to realize that there is one player assigned to “set the edge” and it isn’t always the DE. I’ve seen many fans rail on a DE (or lb) for “not setting the edge” when they are being blocked by an OT with a TE and wr outside of them. That’s not understanding the concept of setting the edge.
I’ve seen others use setting the edge as a complaint of a pass rusher on 3rd and 10. That’s just not what it means.

I voted for "better than expected".

Listen, before this Sunday Harrison had played 36 live game snaps in the 5 games he was active this season for the Steelers. Yes 36. He was quoted as saying he was not getting reps in practice either this year. I expected him to have so many layers of rust that he really did look like an old man out there. I think he looked great for just getting back into the flow of things. I think he'll look better in two weeks, better in 3 weeks if the Pat's are alive, and even better in the Super Bowl should the Pat's make it that far. His 39 year old body has no wear and tear on it this year.

Still can't believe the Steelers released him and it cost the Pat's a whopping $59k to sign him. Hell, if the Pat's win the Super Bowl the Pat's will be his 3rd place employer as far as pay goes for 2017-2018. Steelers paid him over $2m, NFL would pay somewhere around $185k for the playoffs and the Pat's $59k. Chess and checkers, chess and checkers!

What tells me if a defensive player has edge responsibility is whether he is in force tech and how he is shaded (relative to his blocker). As you know, players in force tech are coached to attack the outside of their blocker with their inside foot and shoulder, leaving their outside arm and leg free, which makes it impossible for the blocker to block the force player towards the inside. Harrison executes this technique very well. Lee endlessly gets sucked inside because he, for one reason or another, just doesn't fight to keep his outside shoulder clean, has difficulty attacking with proper technique (squeezing the gap), which means he gets pinned inside too much.

I think Lee's problem is his hand usage and proper leverage. I think it's basically rookie season for him all over again so we'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt and see how he does after an offseason of high-level coaching.

No doubt lee struggles vs the run. But I have seen many times when he is play side but does not have contain. The whole contain concept changes dramatically when you are playing nickel and dime and facing formations such as 3 wide and a TE.

I think Roberts is making sure there is no taunting penalty there, not just congratulating Harrison.
