Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

600 posts ago I started this thread (under a different title) to discuss Brady's influence on Garoppolo. It was then merged with several different topics, but that topic is still open.
its one of the greatest threads i have seen in my years on patsfans

better than Cutie's Boona Pie Recipe thread?

Gotta love the thread title to boot. Ever hear the Law of the Excluded Middle, Maineloon?

Pundits seem to be criticizing letting Garoppolo go, but how much better can he be than Brady the next 3-5 years? Nothing's guaranteed- so yes, it's a gamble, but not an unreasonable one when looking at Brady's offseasons, vegan lifestyle, and lack of convincing decline from 35-40 yo. It's more than reasonable to project a steady small decline in Brady rather than a steep cliff looking at how he's playing at 40.

So to me the good debate is they could have gotten more in the offseason, but I could see the Pats giving that up in order to have half of a season to make sure of Brady at 40. Also, I think Jimmy G was season insurance for non-season-ending injuries. If Brady was out say 8 weeks, a QB was needed to give the Pats the best shot at keeping the season alive until Brady was ready to play again. Don't want to be 2-6 and have Brady be healthy week 9.

Plus Brady's cheaper than Jimmy G, who would not have signed a similar cap friendly below market deal. That's part of the equation too. More money to spend on say the O line and give Brady his best shot at staying injury free.

Past 3-5 years, I think roster turnover of the core becomes an issue like McCourty, Chung, Edelman, Gronk. Might be better to start over at that point assuming Brady retires.

Umm OK... look, I'm probably going to say this wrong, but the level of denial about Brady's age is getting a little silly.

Yes. Max Kellerman was silly for predicting a sudden cliff and trying to stake his name on it happening immediately.

And yes, people are going to be predicting the day Brady's career ends with the same zeal as the nutcases that get giddy trying to predict the end of the world.

And no, Brady's not going to live forever or stay in the saddle indefinitely. Sooner or later, the end WILL come. We all know this.

So why people are going nuts trying to call Brady playing at an elite level 5 years from now.. I'm not sure. I can only chalk it down to an exercise in well studied denial. Now that Jimmy G's playing well in another uniform we need to persuade ourselves that we made the right call because Brady's going to live FOREVER.

I mean it was the right call, of course it was, but not for that reason.

It's implausible to think that Brady will carry his current level of play for the next 5 years. Lasting that long comes down more to luck than judgment, and while Brady's got the luck of the Irish, no one's luck holds forever.

To me, the only rational response to Brady's performance at his age is to take it day by day and try to be ready to respond if the end comes before you're expecting it. You can't do that 5 years in advance.

And when the end comes, I don't think it will be Kellerman's cliff, but I think it will be faster than we want it to be. I see the guy playing until he takes a big injury that he can't return to play from at a level that satisfies himself. That could happen in 5 years, could happen tomorrow. Obviously I hope it won't be tomorrow, but what do I know? What I want doesn't become real just 'cuz I want it.

The Legend of Jimmy Perfect will live on for centuries while the trade that brought the Greek God with the lightning bolt arm to the Bay Area will be forever referred to as "The Heist."
Historians will pay little attention to Belichick's two decades of dominance and instead categorize New England's six time Super Bowl champion coach as the architect of the most lopsided trade in sports history, surpassing the Babe Ruth sale that doomed the Boston Red Sox for nearly a century.
The circumstances behind "The Heist" trade remained a guarded secret for almost 25 years until Coach Belichick, in his last breath of life, uttered his final word....."Krafty."
Much had been written about the collapse of the Patriot dynasty after their sixth and final Lombardi was secured in the same year as "The Heist." The second greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady, unexpectedly announced his retirement from football moments after walking off the Super Bowl field in Minneapolis and Coach Belichick resigned as HC of the NEP that same offseason after working out college quarterbacks at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. In his last known public statement, Belichick barked "ah, fu*k it" as he exited Lucas Oil Stadium leaving baffled media members in his wake. Jonathan Kraft assumed GM responsibilities for New England and immediately hired Eric Mangini to replace the departed Belichick. Kraft traded off assets including Gronkowski and McCourty in order to bundle together enough draft capital to secure the organization's next franchise QB. History will show the team was never able to adequately fill this position and the Patriots floundered in mediocrity for decades....earning the nickname "Cleveland's *****."
At the same time on the west coast, Jimmy the Perfect rewrote every QB record and his 49ers captured 9 titles in 13 years including back to back perfect seasons during his first two full years in San Francisco.

Matt Maiocco on Twitter

“In 2000, when Jeff Garcia set single-season #49ers record for yards passing, SF had 4,239 net passing yards. This season, Brian Hoyer, C.J. Beathard and Jimmy Garoppolo have combined for 3,633 net passing yards — the most for the 49ers since that 2000 season.”

Providing he has health, good coaching and a solid supporting cast, there is no question Jimmy will be a very good NFL QB. There is no debate there.

His career is off to an outstanding start

I've been hammering the Garrapolites for being chicken littles and completely uninformed and lacking an understanding of how little leverage BB had.

Reiss lays it out perfectly here.

Did the Patriots get enough from the 49ers for Jimmy G?

Just bookmark that Reiss post for everyone *****ing how we only got a second round pick out of it. Because unless JG melts down or gets severely injured we all know that we will need to point this out again and again over the next decade.

God help us.

Now, even with the above, I don't tihnk trading him was wrong. I do, however, think the Pat's could've taken the approach this year where they play Garropollo more in the 4th q or whenever we have a 10+ pt lead. It would give Brady some rest -- meaning more likilhiood he would be injury free in the playoffs as most of the recent playoffs he has not been 100%. Also would've showcased Jimmy so that when we traded him in this offseason we could've gotten a better pick.

This paragraph happens when a poster has no ****ing clue who Tom Brady is, how football works as well as not even the slightest idea about something called the salary cap and how it functions in combination with franchise tags.

Oh boy..

Nothing good comes from a jimmy thread. Its like losing your favorite wife. You can drink your sorrows away, reflect on life but nothing you do will bring her back and every time you try you fall deeper into the abyss. Even thinking about her just gets you sad and upset so Just let it go.

IT IS A DAMN SPORT NOT LIFE.

Will JG be better than TB 3-5 years from now? In all likelihood yes. But the world will have ended by that point anyway so I'm really not sure what the hell we're all doing here.. (Not serious)

(Kinda serious)

God help us.

Many posters, myself including, have been pointing these facts out all along.

Imo #1 is the biggest.

Pats gave up leverage, on purpose, for insurance of half the season.

That was more than obvious post 2017 Draft.

Its a "poster" problem.

Not a Bill got fleeced problem.

*Draft Note*

New England will have 3 of the top 64 picks. We're set up great, with plenty of versatility to move up, stay put or trade out to 2019 (really hope a bad team comes calling and we get their early 2019 pick)

So while everybody would like more, it's a lot more complex than that. And we're set up very nicely for the future.

Exactly.

In the end, Bill sacrificed maximum value for Jimmy for three main reasons.

1) If TB12 got hurt midway thru the season, he had Jimmy.
2) If TB12 fell off the "Kellerman Cliff", he had Jimmy
3) Would Jimmy accept a raise to stay? No.

I didn't say Brady would carry his current level of play.

Nor do I deny Brady's age. The point is, if he hasn't declined from 35-40, there's good evidence right there to make a reasonable assumption there could be a gentle, slower decline in performance from 40-45 than you might expect otherwise.

The reason for using the next 5 years as a barometer is making a bet on a very good Brady for those years makes the trade make much more sense. After 5 years not just Brady, but most of the team's stars will likely start turning over, if not a little sooner. So having Garoppolo beyond then doesn't matter as much.

Based on the atypically unnoticeable decline from 35-40, I think you can reasonably make an extrapolation that Brady's next 5 years, while almost certainly with an inevitable decline, will still leave him playing at a pretty good level. Which dovetails with my original point- how much better can Garoppolo be? Couple that with uncertainty, plus the high salary Jimmy G would command. Plus you get to put that extra salary to work making the rest of your team better, such as investing in an O-line to protect Brady.
