Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

Exactly.

In the end, Bill sacrificed maximum value for Jimmy for three main reasons.

1) If TB12 got hurt midway thru the season, he had Jimmy.
2) If TB12 fell off the "Kellerman Cliff", he had Jimmy
3) Would Jimmy accept a raise to stay? No.

Yep... and that’s why he was drafted too. Though none of us know for sure what “maximum value” really was.

Agree on the maximum value question. I think a low 1st was max val but the fact that he was not under contract in 2018 AND costing a team $22m to franchise brought his return comp down considerably.

Apparently Jimmy G is about to receive a 5 year $120m contract with $60m guaranteed.

Chew on that. How could we have matched that?

Not surprised.

It's a tick less than Carr so that makes sense.

Carr got 5/$125 w $70m injury guarantee 1st 3 years and $40m at signing.

That's the going rate for elite QBS that don't grow on trees.
Yes I would take him over any QB not named Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers.

sounds like a bargain for San Fran

I didn't say Brady would carry his current level of play.

Nor do I deny Brady's age. The point is, if he hasn't declined from 35-40, there's good evidence right there to make a reasonable assumption there could be a gentle, slower decline in performance from 40-45 than you might expect otherwise.

The reason for using the next 5 years as a barometer is making a bet on a very good Brady for those years makes the trade make much more sense. After 5 years not just Brady, but most of the team's stars will likely start turning over, if not a little sooner. So having Garoppolo beyond then doesn't matter as much.

Based on the atypically unnoticeable decline from 35-40, I think you can reasonably make an extrapolation that Brady's next 5 years, while almost certainly with an inevitable decline, will still leave him playing at a pretty good level. Which dovetails with my original point- how much better can Garoppolo be? Couple that with uncertainty, plus the high salary Jimmy G would command. Plus you get to put that extra salary to work making the rest of your team better, such as investing in an O-line to protect Brady.

Right on the money, good post.

Where did you hear this? Do you have a link?

I wouldn't be surprised if what he actually gets is near that. He'll get franchise quarterback money with the way he's played for them since being inserted into the starting line-up.

That's a 50% higher guarantee than Gilmore!

Curran has an interesting take. It’s pretty clear that BB was planning on transitioning from TB 12 to JG, but Kraft wasn’t on board. Now the future of the organization is in flux and McDaniels and Patricia may be looking to leave.

Tom E. Curran

I just hope BB, with his sons on this coaching staff, sticks around long enough to find the next QB and position the team for the future.

I highly doubt Kraft would stop BB from doing anything even trading Brady

Hes kinda stating the obvious. Kraft is old. BB is old. Tom is old. JE11 is in the early 30s. Gronk has big cap numbers in 2018 and 2019 and also when he is 30. Chung, McCourty, Solder are around 30. Josh and Blackbeard deserve to be HCs. This will end someday.

..........but not yet.

Agree. I think Curran is reaching here. If Bill saw a decline in Tom's play Bob would have signed off on it. I'm convinced of it. 17 years of personnel moves show this.

If that was the case, at the end of this year they would trade Tom with 2 years left on his deal, franchise Jimmy and Jimmy is the starter for 2018. Transition executed with a meat cleaver. Nice and neat.

Obviously Tom is still playing at an MVP level, Bill projects him to be at, or near that level next year so they trade Jimmy and draft a QB next year and in 2019 they are covered either with Tom again or the backup getting another year as understudy.

The salary part is so underrated also. Brady will likely be 10-15 Mill lower cap hit than Jimmy G going forward. And the way BB goes for depth, that is a lot of depth. The big "IF" is can Brady be good to great for the next 5 years, which at least offsets 5 years of Jimmy (I.e. he is 31 by then)

And the most important thing is SUper Bowls. Can the Pats win some more, and will it be more than the number Jimmy wins?

Just draft another and see if they can him good too.

I have no doubt that brady can play a couple of more years after this season. Jimmy G wasn't willing to wait that long. Let's hope bill can find Brady's future replacement in this upcoming draft or next year's draft.
