Pundits seem to be criticizing letting Garoppolo go, but how much better can he be than Brady the next 3-5 years?
Umm OK... look, I'm probably going to say this wrong, but the level of denial about Brady's age is getting a little silly.
Yes. Max Kellerman was silly for predicting a sudden cliff and trying to stake his name on it happening immediately.
And yes, people are going to be predicting the day Brady's career ends with the same zeal as the nutcases that get giddy trying to predict the end of the world.
And no, Brady's not going to live forever or stay in the saddle indefinitely. Sooner or later, the end WILL come. We all know this.
So why people are going nuts trying to call Brady playing at an elite level 5 years from now.. I'm not sure. I can only chalk it down to an exercise in well studied denial. Now that Jimmy G's playing well in another uniform we need to persuade ourselves that we made the right call because Brady's going to live FOREVER.
I mean it was the right call, of course it was, but not for that reason.
It's implausible to think that Brady will carry his current level of play for the next 5 years. Lasting that long comes down more to luck than judgment, and while Brady's got the luck of the Irish, no one's luck holds forever.
To me, the only rational response to Brady's performance at his age is to take it day by day and try to be ready to respond if the end comes before you're expecting it. You can't do that 5 years in advance.
And when the end comes, I don't think it will be Kellerman's cliff, but I think it will be faster than we want it to be. I see the guy playing until he takes a big injury that he can't return to play from at a level that satisfies himself. That could happen in 5 years, could happen tomorrow. Obviously I hope it won't be tomorrow, but what do I know? What I want doesn't become real just 'cuz I want it.
