Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

BB tried to keep JG by signing him to a bridge deal and JG wouldn't bite. BB suggested so himself indirectly during the presser that announced the trade. It explains why he didn't move him earlier.

Wouldn’t that be something to find out before the draft instead of after?

Ideally, sure. But apparently he didn't know at that point and/or he wanted to keep JG as insurance as long as possible with Brady turning 40. It's reasonable to assume it was a fluid situation that didn't come to a head 'til sometime after the draft and before the trade deadline.

Over the course of two weeks? Get a grip.

I’m telling you, the pro-Jimmy G folks on here should not be patriots fans after what Tom has done for this team.

I think Belichick made the right decision but I agree with those who think he could have gotten more at the draft. That said I think Belichick really wanted him out of the AFC and that limited his choices as SF and Chicago weren’t going to give him a first in that draft.

I'm happy for JGQ and his success in SF. Their fans are head over heels at this point

That being said, the Pats absolutely did the right thing here. Held onto him as long as they could, then got what they could for him when it became clear he wasn't signing here. You don't trade the best QB in the NFL no matter how shiny the newer guy looks at the moment.

Pretty much. It's the same people who **** themselves on the GDT. So busy looking at what we don't have that they can't find any time to look at what we do have, which is the #1 team in our division yet again, with a clear path to the Super Bowl. Excessive love for Jimmy is dangerously close to hating on the Patriots, IMHO.

I don't disagree with any of that. But I am sold on the notion that BB wanted to find a way to keep JG short of franchising him and it just didn't work out. A handsome guaranteed contract to hang on as Brady's eventual successor apparently didn't appeal to Jimmy.

I'd like to know if Chicago offered anything for him before the draft. That's where I think he should've ended up ideally. The Bears should've pitched a first rounder plus additional picks.

I would have loved that but Belichick apparently wasn’t interested.

Tom’s passer rating was higher than JG’s yesterday. Just saying.

And his pick was nearly as bad - a piss poor throw that threw away points for the 49ers. It happens.

He has played well. They gave him away for peanuts.

What would you have done if no one else was willing to give up more than a high 2d to acquire JG? Traded Brady? Franchised JG and removed all cap flexibility, forcing several key players to be cut? Those are pretty much the options and they aren’t all that appealing.

Indications are pretty strong they could've gotten more.
