Tomlin is a joke

No but if Tomlin is as stupid and terrible as everyone here says, that would be the natural implication. Personally, I don't see how one can call Tomlin stupid after looking at his record but that's just me.

Because as Lombardi often says (actually an Aurelius quote):

The secret of all victory lies in the organization of the non-obvious.

And that's where Tomlin, Harbaugh, Carrol and all those other supposed top coaches fail considerably more often than BB.

over Tomlin's tenure, could you replace him with a fairly large handful of NFL coaches (keeping the same players and assistants) and expect similar results?
I kind of think with all other things being equal, Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy, Payton et al put up similar or better numbers with that group of players and coaches over the last 10 seasons

over BB's tenure, keeping everything else the same, would you expect similar Patriot results inserting Tomlin or any of that other handful of HC's from around the league?

again, I liken Tomlin to Joe Torre.......can manage the personalities, but isn't a huge strategic guy, smart enough to surround himself with good people......doesn't make him a bad HC, but doesn't make him a very good or great one, either.......

That's a GREAT comparison.

Not criticizing what you wrote but I will never understand how they let Bruce Arians go and ended up with Haley. I mean for us its a genius move.. but Haley really is an imbecile..

Bingo! The objective margin between being the best and just one of the best can be very small and to consistently be able to maintain that little margin shows the tremendous difference is overall quality between BB and the other coaches. Doesn't mean they are all stupid though, just not as good as the best. For example, Usain Bolt is the best ever but that doesn't make Justin Gatlin slow.

it does make justin gatlin the poster boy for track doping though

It depends on your POV.

If you expect league average then Tomlin is not stupid because that league average is the equivalent of clown college. i.e. if he doesnt waste a challenge on the second play of the game to gain 4 yards it is already something that is above average..

However, if you look at how Tomlin failed through the lens of what you would expect from BB then he does look like a total bozo that wasted 3-4 minutes on irrelevant things only to realize seconds before a snap that they might need another playcall ready in case the timer doesnt get stopped. And to make things worse the usual excuse making and finger wagging started right after the game as annual tradition which also points to a culture that is not necessarily big on owning you mistakes.

No doubt that there is a gulf between BB and the rest of the league. So much so that it makes me wonder if the whole culture of football is in general intellectually lacking. But if you exclude BB as an outlier and evaluate the rest of them among their brethren, based on record I think you have to say that Tomlin is about as good as any of them.

I guess they were trying to protect rapistburger from all the hits he was taking since Arians likes to throw it deep, so they got anyone else that they could get?

Probably snapped the ball with 20 seconds to play @ 1st and goal, with a time out in your pocket....the pats could run 4 plays with that situation, with 1 play most likely clocking it to stop clock.
Maybe, if you watch the replay half the team was around midfield. If they hurried up they could have pulled it off but again they didn't seem prepared.

You can argue the whats, ifs, hows etc but what it comes down to is Ws and Ls. Tomlin is HC over a team that gets more Ws than almost all. That pretty much is the only metric that counts.
This is comparable to D stat rankings vs D points allowed. Lots of things in the stats may point to concerns, however, at the end of the day it is all about points allowed. For an HC it is all about W's and Ls. whether you like Tomlin or not, he has the Ws to make claim to being a top tier HC.

We no like!

The Steelers have the same number of wins as the Pats with Tomlin as the coach. If he is holding them back, how much better would their record be with a better head coach?
You looked at their schedule? And the number of shaky wins against bad teams they had?

Coaching definitely holds them back.

If Mike Tomlin gets the rule changed what is the league going to say to all the Lion and Cowboy fans?

"Your team would've gone to the Super Bowl under the new rule "

Not only that they'd have to explain why Aaron Rodgers' only 4th quarter comeback against a winning team in his entire career was taken away (he only has 12).

There are others. Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh come to mind. Tom Landry is another I might throw in there.
Names I was remiss in listing.

Gibbs doesn't get enough credit. 4 SB appearances w/ 3 different QBs when none of them were HoFers.

Thats incredible.
