Eli Manning: An end of an era....

Ya know Tony, I am pretty sure that the Giants are going to make a hard push for McDaniels and Casserio this off season. Before this I thought it would be a tough offer to say no to. It's a great franchise (just ask Bill), solid defensive talent, an aging but decent QB, and will likely pick in the top 5 in a good QB year.

But now I don't know. All the rest is the same, but ideally it would be nice for McDaniel to pick out his QB of the future THIS season and have Eli there for the transition. Doesn't look as good as it did yesterday.

I guess the other way to look at it is he'd go to NY with a clean slate AND a long term contract, so he'd have time to develop his QB. At any rate, the Giants are definitely tanking, but are a hot mess right now.

I can see and understand McDaniels going but am praying that Caserio stays here. Not sure what would be the motivation for Caserio to go would be but maybe starting from scratch and building it up would be. Fingers crossed.

What's so weird about this is the Giants' front office should have made this decision at the trade deadline. The Giants could have worked out a deal with a team on the cusp of the playoffs that has an offensive line for Eli and picked up a couple of draft picks at the least. The Packers, Ravens, even the Bills would be interested trade partners - maybe others.

I suppose that Goober (or is it Gomer?) could be a caretaker for a season or two while his drafted QB of the Future learns the pro game; but if Jimmy G becomes a UFA then Coughlin would be remiss not to make a very, very serious push for him. He'll have whatever cap space he needs to git'er done.

Yes

Giants tank the rest of this season, and then bring in their QBOTF.
Jaquars ditch Bortles after this season and bring in Eli to try to win now
Makes sense, though Jacksonville could go younger and look at a guy like Cousins, for example.

I mean nobody in this thread has mentioned how talented Geno Smith really is. Look, not even Eli or Brady can do this.

Desperate move by a clueless coach.

If Giants ownership were a classy as everyone claims they would veto this move and fire the clown coach, how do you bench a 2 x Super Bowl winning QB for Geno Smith?

Not a promising young guy, not someone with a future, Geno Smith.

That is awful. Yeah the Giants are the "gold standard"

Surely if you want to move on from Eli you just give him 5 more starts and cut/trade him at the end of the season

Unsure why posters on here need to make fun of a guy getting benched. Is it because he outplayed Brady in two super bowls? Just hate anything New York?

Outplayed? I don't remembered Eli manning's receivers dropping balls or his defense dropping an interception. Credit to him for making the plays

Hating everything NY/NJ sports is in my DNA.

As they say it is what it is.

Jaguars with Cousins sounds like a dangerous team.

It's the brief greatness versus long-term consistency argument, which we see in all 4 major U.S. sports, played out in almost its purest form.

Koufax or Blyleven
Sayers or Martin
etc...

Like you, I'll take the greatness, even though it seems a bit off.
I’m also taking the team result over the individual success or more aptly taking championships over consistently good but not quite good enough.

2018 Eli isn't worth a conditional swap of 7th round picks. I'd just wait for the Giants to cut him if I were actually interested in a caretaker 1 year QB.

At least when you're getting #1, you know there's something extra like a stellar defense or run game to carry you over the top.

#2 fits a guy like Marino to a T. I'm sure it's very frustrating for Dolphins fans that something always got in the way.

I'd take #1 too.
Perfect example. Would you be a happier fan if you were a dolphin fan for Marino’s career or a giant fan for eli’s?
No question in my book.

But if you were a GM and could draft reincarnated 20 year old Eli or reincarnated 20 year old Marino, who would you take?

There will be multiple teams out there, and multiple QBs available. How they'll shake out is TBD. If Jacksonville doesn't bring back Bortles, that'll free up about $19m, so they should be able to compete financially for pretty much any available QB. I just think that, for Eli, Jacksonville makes more sense than Denver.
Maybe for Eli, but not for Jacksonville.

If I'm Jacksonville, I'm all in for Kirk Cousins. They have a win now roster that simply needs a pretty good QB.

I don’t do hypotheticals like that. A players career is what he does on the field not what could have supposedly happened under other circumstances. Coulda doesn’t belong in the sand conversation with did in my book.

As an aside for all the accolades Marino got for piling up numbers vs bad teams if you look at the game his team was eliminated in each year his play was often a primary reason. There weee too many of them to not conclude that the “Marino package” included not playing well in big games.
