While I understand the reasoning behind the sentiment of "They were done for the season, so it's ok for MB to want the surgery and miss the rest of it", I can't agree with it.

In the report that I posted, he never once gives a hint of this mindset. He only says that the Packers wanted him to play, but he didn't feel comfortable doing it. That shows, to me at least, that he has his own self-interest as a way higher priority than any collective mindset, since he rapidly changed his mind when getting here.

Moreover ,although is very sensible to imagine that the Packs will fail to reach the play offs (And they will), the team is not yet disqualified and him making a point of giving up now, before it actually happen shows a certain lack of class. I really disliked this move by him and I don't think I can respect him after this one, which is a shame, cause I really liked him. If i saw a colleague or teammate doing something similar, I'd be pretty upset.

Still, it's undeniable that he is a good player and will help out, so I'm not all condemning this move by the Patriots. It was a brilliant one, in fact.

It's not just his rotator cuff (reportedly). It's also his labrum (ligaments that hold top of arm in the shoulder socket). Sticking your arm out creates torque on your shoulder (as the arm resists downward force of gravity). With a strong, stable shoulder, this is obviously no issue.

When shoulder's compromised, there's a larger chance for dislocation and instability in the joint when you're doing something with the arm out away from the body. I wouldn't expect him to be able to exert a lot of force in a dynamic environment like blocking due to the instability. He can probably push an inanimate object with decent power / pain tolerance. But when he's trying to push a strong, heavy guy who's sprinting, that creates a different set of requirements for responding - he won't be able to align his arm for stability before trying to shove.

But, we'll see. I hope he can play decently. He's a pro athlete - I'm not. Nor am I an expert. Back to my desk job.

Packers signed someone to 3 years, who discloses shoulder pain every week. They tell him to play through it, as it is manageable and it becomes worse. The team falls apart, separately. During the process, Bennett is being pumped with anti-inflammatories, at the same time, a running record (apparently documented as well) is being established that his arm is getting worse. Because the team doctor doesn't really acknowledge the severity of his injury and how it's getting worse, he's becoming skeptical. This is exacerbated when he takes the bye week to get the medicine out of his system. He hasn't missed one game to this point.

Subsequently, after getting different opinions, three other doctors say that surgery is immenint - key word. He's on a sinking ship that has pushed him through a worsening injury.

Instead he options to take the surgery, an investment in the last two years of his contract - he wants to be effective long term. They take it as a ride to IR, free money and next year being a retirement for him, based on a tweet.

Unfortunately, we cannot assume any context of this tweet - how serious it was, how much arguing had been done to this point, etc., but the Packers do not enjoy this string of actions.

So the Packers send him shipping. The Patriots, a former team that he enjoyed playing for, doctors for the team whom he trusts, claims him. He's cleared, but it's still obvious - surgery is imminent. The better environment makes him more dedicated. The staff, with which he holds more trust, makes him feel comfortable - probably assures him that he'll need work on it soon - and he decides to play.

I dunno man, I had to type all that out to process it. Bennett probably shouldn't have made that tweet - that being said - if what Bennett is saying has truth to it, I'm assuming the Packers Dr. didn't outright force him to play, but possibly didn't acknowledge the worsening injury as much as he should. When it was too late, they say he's failed to disclose an injury after he decides for surgery. Had Bennett had a better, more honest communication path from the doctor, I'm sure this would have played out a bit differently.

I just wasted a bunch of time but whatever, welcome Bennett, you're one of my favorite NFL players.

I'm not sure why you can't agree with it. It makes perfect sense. Hell, that same team, the Green Bay Packers, is looking at that same situation with its best player, only with regards to coming back post-op or not, rather than op/wait.

"First of all I want to be healthy, that's the most important thing," Rodgers told media members Friday, via the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "But if we're healthy in eight weeks and it would make sense to come back, then I'm going to come back.


"The only reason to come back would be that I'm healed completely. If that doesn't happen in eight weeks, there's not even a conversation."

Last year, Bennett, even though he was banged up pretty much all season, never played fewer than 50% of the snaps in a game. This season, Allen's played in 1/3 of the snaps or fewer in 6 of the 8 games. The Patriots just claimed Bennett off waivers, when the guy's arm is a surgery waiting to happen. The Patriots clearly weren't taking your "Love what you have" advice.

This really isn't difficult stuff. If the Patriots were truly happy with Allen, Bennett wouldn't be on the team.

Its even more simple. It was the opportunity that presented itself. They took it. For whatever the reason. They didn't search for it. They didn't cut Allen. They didn't bring another healthy TE when they had a chance etc. Im not going to speculate how happy they are with Allen (60%?) You make your case for your speculation its about Allen and thats ok. Its still just a speculation.

But none of that was the point of what some of us were saying about the crap Allen is getting here. People who actually bothered to watch his film are just trying to say Allen did well in what is believed he was asked to do. I don't know what BB, McD had in mind when they signed him. I agree contract would suggest more than blocking TE. But with 8 different receivers targeted by TB each game it is also possible BB is ok with Allen's role and job he does at the moment. Also the season is not over yet.

And what if they will actually try Bennett as blocking TE in regard to his health condition and release Allen on more routes esp. in the red zone? This speculation might look less likely than yours but I would hardly be shocked to see it play out.

This team is pretty banged up and with lesser insurance for Tom now. Id expect more situational football going forward not unlike LAC game. Adding another big body on the line (that can catch) without subtracting the one they have already (Allen) could be their preferable option going forward instead of bringing in another small receiver from PS.

Before all the speculations Marty first has to play a snap and show he can stay on the field..

Honestly I guess that’s just how people are. A friend of mine at work is a diehard Packers fan and she came to find me today to be mad, saying “your ******* team stole Bennett, wtf! Well he’s a POS anyway and he hid an injury! GB is gonna file against him!”

Thankfully she’s a pretty reasonable person so when I explained that his injury is the same injury that he had last year (with NE) and he passed his physical when signing his contract with GB, etc, she started to understand better. When I explained that the Pats will get him on the cheap this year and can dump him next year for no guaranteed money, and that he may elect to play for us when he wanted surgery in GB, and the possibility that the Pats may even get a compensatory pick for losing a player in free agency that they ultimately still got back in that same season.... she was back to being mad.

You know, you're absolutely correct about it being difficult to have a real dialogue with people who have an agenda against certain players. I'm one of those people who thinks D. Allen, at least to this point, has been useless. And I've been guilty of pounding that ad nauseum. With that said, I just don't like ex-Colts. That would make sense with some players(Jordy Nelson, Jahri Evans) going out to bat for the Packers doctor saying the doctor has never pushed them to play.

The Patriots have intrigue as the TE2 position, because of the historical fragility of the guy in the TE1 position, so.....

They've kept Allen, so far, and that's really what we should be looking at in this equation, IMO.

• Expecting him to eventually grasp the playbook, and looking to either the end of the season or next year?
• Insurance against Bennett not being able to make it?
• Opting to use him as the blocker and Bennett mostly as the pure receiving TE?
• Just not willing to take the hit on Allen being a bust?
• All of the above and/or something completely different?

It's not that Belichick has super powers. For guys like Bennett and Blount who want more money than the Pats are willing to pay, but who like it in New England, Bill lays out this strategy. Sign with whichever team will pay big bucks. In the middle of the season start a controversy over an injury, attitude, anything will do. Be creative! Force their hand so they release you. We will pick you up when the other thirty teams pass (ain't gonna help anyone else mid-season, not knowing the offense). We 'll even make sure that you get your old number back. It's win, win.
