49ers Shopping NaVorro Bowman [UPDATE: Bowman released; now signed by Raiders]

Clowney on IR? Is there a joke I'm missing?

I think he meant Mercilus. All three of them got injured Monday, but Clowney's injury looks to be short-term and in fact he's expected to play this Sunday.

Does Bowman still have the legs under him and is able to cover? I don't know what his measurables were coming into the league, but if they are, sign the beast!

Edit: After seeing the link to Bowman's contract. I'm not sure anymore. He would need to be cut at some point with that contract.

Not a problem anymore as he's been cut. So his cap hit with the Pats/whichever team he signs with will be determined by the new contract he signs.

Oh I am not saying they shouldn't do it. They should. Just we need to have the right expectations.

Personally I think it is a 3 man race.

Pats for sure could use him.
Dallas could for sure
Oalkand could use him.

Steelers maybe... They have 2 young guys who are high picks though so they'd probably want to stand pat and let them develope

KC has 2 good OLBs.. no need and he won't want to sit behind them
GB is the same as KC to a lesser degree.
Eagles/Panthers don't need him and I think they are happy with the Ds they have and don't want to rock the boat too much though he COULD have spots on both teams though I think he'd be rotated.

So I haven't looked at every team or potential outcome but trying to do a quick look at cap space, playing time, and fit I think the order goes

#1 Oakland - Both fit and need. They have a good chance to bounce back though Carr is hurt.
#2 Dallas - Probably would have been the best fit but being 2-3 and no Elliotf for 2 weeks hurt their odds some i'd think.
#3 Pats. Pats seem to have it together the most but the fit isn't as seamless though the need is there.

I think that's a solid list, really the only point I'd clarify is that I'm not sure the Raiders are strong contenders even with Carr. They're still probably the third best team in their own division with him, and I think their defensive shortcomings are so across-the-board that even LB help might not make a huge difference. I think I can make a reasonable case that the Patriots' defense is 1-2 serviceable additions away from being league average or maybe even better if all goes well. Don't think I can make the same case for the Raiders because they're so talent-deficient across the board. After Khalil Mack, there's just no talent there; at least with the Pats the talent is there in the secondary. and it's really just DT and LB that needs to be fixed.

He's from just outside Washington so he's probably going to the Redskins or maybe the Ravens

With Watt and Clowney on IR, I expect Houston to be heavily interested...

If the Texans make a run at Bowman, I'd expect it to be more with an eye toward him stepping into Cushing's role while he's suspended. He can't do what Mercilus does, and McKinney doesn't need replacing, but Cushing's suspension did leave a hole in their lineup that he might be able to patch.

Well ****! I didn't know! Thanks for the update!

Why do you say whining and agitating? Did I miss something other than him saying he still has a chip on his shoulder?

He apparently wasn't happy that the 49ers were trying to make him a situational player. I don't think that's whining or agitating either, but I assume that's where it's coming from.

"I don't know, man," Bowman said. "We had a conversation, and I don't know. They're doing what they want to do. I don't know. I don't like it. No one likes coming out of the game, but I'm a team player."

"They told me, but it's just hard to do that in the midst of a tough game, and no player likes getting taken out," Bowman said. "So I don't know."

Bowman went on to repeat the phrase "I don't know" a couple more times when asked if he at least understood Shanahan's rationale. Bowman admitted to struggling to play on short rest against the Los Angeles Rams a couple of weeks ago but has not expressed such concerns when given a full week to recover.

Yeah, that sort of stuff plays really well in BB's fiefdom.
