Addressing the LT Position

I don't remember which week, but there was a report circulating that Solder was receiving treatment prior to the game. Maybe he's dealing with an injury.

If Solder couldn't go, it would almost certainly be Waddle at LT. As a matter of fact, I think we've seen them put him there before at least a couple of times.

The longer term outlook screams high round draft pick, and while looking back in hindsight is rarely a fruitful exercise in terms of the missed draft picks, it does kind of suck that we've lost out on guys like Easley, Cyrus Jones, the stolen first rounder etc, lately. A first round/pick LT would've been nice to have these days.

I definitely don't think Solder was worth a first round pick. I wasn't much of a Matt Light fan either. We haven't had an above average LT since Armstrong. But Bill has one of the best track records in the league in the first round. He almost never misses. Not going to complain about using a pick in the teens on an average to below average. As far as his recent play, like another poster mentioned, I don't think he has been healthy. He has never been all that consistent, even when healthy. So who knows?

I don't know, I think you're selling these guys short. As my friends in India would say, I thought Light was "Pretty OK". He was good enough to win three rings. Up until last year's Super Bowl, I thought Soldier was also well above average.

Because they traded Seymour and got the 17th pick. You have to get the pick first, unless you get a German guy new to football.

The Pats get a first round pick every year...I'm not sure what you're talking about. Great O-linemen have been taken at the end of the first round.

And with OL technique coming out of college being so bad these days, whether you're picking at 17 or 32 you're probably going to have to coach the guy up quite a bit. The talent pipeline at tackle is more about development than drafting raw ability at this point, IMO. You need a good athlete to develop into your LT, but those can be found at the end of the first round in many drafts.

Well, it is that easy. The Pats needed a LT back in 2011 because they knew Light was retiring and then he stepped in the next year as the starting LT.

I wish there was a facepalm emoticon sometimes. You can point out the obvious to people and still get ignorant posts like that back. If it is that easy then go on and ask KC, Rams & co. how great their surefire top 10 LTs have worked out. Jesus...

I actually am thinking that it has to be cancer related- he has been NFI on the injury list way too many times.

While Occams Razor would agree I just dont see BB going into the season without more backup especially once Garcia was done for the season. I mean we are talking about a LT here who might be the second most important individual player on the team in terms of risk.

This is slowly sliding into comedy territory.

How is a player who has been a starter for over 6 years now, not a first round pick success story ? Do you expect every first round pick to be a HoF level player ? He wont be a player like Thomas or as consistent as Tyron Smith but how many players are ?

So, the 17th pick is the same as 30-32?

Depends. The Pats often take players in the first round that often drop. And I don't think they'll be picking that low next year.

We're not talking about KC or LA. We're talking about the Patriots.

Well, if you're going to be optimistic.

I'm done with this. It really doesn't depend on anything, the 32nd pick doesn't become a 17.

Of course players drop and sometimes a certain position will dry up before 17. Doesn't mean 2+2=5 that day.

Hi! Welcome to Patsfans.com!

You are talking about how easy it is to draft a great LT. It makes you look more and more like an idiot.

It may have been something that came out of left field.

It makes me think of Cannon, the year before last, when his return/recovery from chemo unexpectedly took much longer than anticipated. He didn't really recover until the beginning of last season and then was lights out.

But Solder already missed most of camp and the preseason long before Garcia went out. If there was even a small question of his availability I am confident BB would have brought in someone as a safety net.

Unless you think his absence back in July is not connected to what made him miss the last two weeks.

Light was fine. He got bashed because he went up against some good DREs in an era where they lined up at DRE and rushed the passer every play, and he allowed fewer sacks and pressures than they got against everyone else.

Belichick has more faith in Waddle and Fleming that all of us do, and less faith in what was available.
